According to today's telewag, Pearson will only get banned for one game rather than three, does anyone know why this is?

I find it ridiculous that a player should sit out 5 games in a season due to 15 bookings. Bookings are part and parcel of the game (admittedly a large amount of Pearson's are for dissent which is inexcusable) and they are for punishment at point of offence. Basically, a warning to say 'do that again and you're off and you'll get a suspension'. If you don't commit another offence worthy of a second yellow then that should be the end of it, unless it's for reoccurring offences such as 'diving' or dissent.

That's the thing with suspensions too. They're not only a punishment for the player and the club involved, they also give advantages to teams for whom no offences were committed against, whilst the player serves his suspension. This is why I'd be in favour of trialling sin bins for yellow cards, with no retrospective suspensions for accumulation of bookings. If the punishment was immediate I'm sure Shaun would keep his mouth shut more often.

Pearson hasn't been included in today's team to prevent him from picking up a yellow card. Now if we go to Braintree needing a result Hurst would probably bring Pearson back in. Imagine Pearson then picks up a yellow card for an innocuous foul and misses the play-offs. We'd have then essentially lost him for 4 out of the last 5 games in addition to the earlier served two match ban.

It's the same for everyone though. Not everyone gets that many bookings. A lot of them are to deny the opposition a chance on goal so failure to punish them would encourage even more cheating (which it is) then you get now.

To deny the opposition an immediate goal scoring opportunity is a red. All yellows are not for "cheating". So you agree that a player should miss 5 games for being booked, on average, every 2.5-3 games?

If the bans were explicitly for an accumulation of cards due to dissent then that would be a different matter. Need more respect in the game.

There's no justification for a player collecting 15 cards over a season. See no problem with that cumulatively leading to a player missing a decent few games.

Not if they're largely for dissent, you're right. Which, as I said I would have no problem the player being 'cited' for, as long as it was explicitly for lack of respect to the referee. Most other yellows are par for the course in game situations, no? Cut dissent out and I imagine Pearson would have less than 10.

Are the bookings wiped clean for the play-offs? So, for example, if Pearson got booked at Braintree, would that suspend him for all (possible) 3 play-off games, or would he be ok?

It is an interesting argument. And not sure what side of it I sit in.

I agree with all your points, but The problem with yellow cards in football equalling a sin bin is that it is very easy to earn a yellow card- our game against alfreton, 6 players would of been sin bined. So you would then have to change what a yellow card offence was, which would be a big change in direction for the FA

It is perhaps slightly unfair that a booking in the play offs could mean a player missing the final.

If someone has 15 cautions in say, 25 league games he is going some but if he plays every league games, say 10 cup games and then gets in the play offs his record isnt nearly as bad but the punishment remains the same.

I agree Chris, but it doesn't take away from the fact Pearson picks up some silly bookings (and quite a few typical defender ones too).

I believe that if he got a booking at Braintree then he would be suspended for the playoffs. But if he gets no booking then his other 14 would be wiped and he would head into the playoffs with a clean slate.

A similar format to many tournaments in that bookings are wiped out after the quarter finals.

Not sure that is right Biggs. Not 100% sure myself but i dont think there is any wiping for 15 bookings at any stage of the season

On the FA website it says 15 bookings get wiped at the end if the season. Not sure whether that is the regular or to include playoffs!

This was what lead to my comment above. There has been a recent move by law breakers to avoid punishing cummulative yellow cards at key points in competitions.

Goes back to a few years ago when Pavel Nedved missed the Champions League final because he picked up a couple in the group stage and a booking in the semi.

I'm guessing, but I'd be surprised if they were wiped. It's a big difference between Nedved's (or Gazza's) 2 and Pearson's 14 (FOURTEEN!)

It does seem unfair though that a player who has given his all through out the season  could end up missing the three most important games of his career so far, he's going to be walking a tightrope each game he plays and maybe not play to his full potential.  I no I'm probably biased and would be saying something different if it was an opposition player.

There is no need to continually get booked for back chatting the ref, its a weakness and does the team and the club no good, as good as he is Pearson should receive a fine each time he is booked for this offence or make him captain, he might then get a bit more sympathy from the ref

I think Jennings is one who could really benefit from a good game on Saturday at Braintree. Not in the squad for the Hyde match, if we could get him back in and get him scoring, that would be perfect going into the play-offs.

Probably fairly similar stats on a bookings per game basis mind...

Gazza - 2 in 6(?)
Nedved - 3 in 10
Pearson - 14 in 47.

They all relate to about 1 in 3, regardless of how many bookings it was. Although I do agree he needs to learn to keep his gob shut.

Yeah that's a good point, although I dunno, it seems easy to pick up a couple of daft bookings whereas so many over 8 or 9 months is just stupid.

Ref was trying to stamp his authority early in the game, from my angle their seemed alot of air between Pearson and their man and it looked as though the player stuck his leg out to make contact...unfortunate for Shaun but when we lose on Sunday at least he will only miss some p1ss poor game next season.

I didn't think Pearsons foul was worthy of a yellow, barely made  any contact
and the Gateshead player made a meal out of it.
I know Pearson only has himself to blame  for missing the next game (s)
because of his silly earlier bookings, but i would have thought that bookings
gained in the normal season would have been expunged for the play offs, these
are  in effect additional games to the regular season after all, extremely unfair
to be suspended now for potentially 2 of the most important games in the clubs
history IMHO.

It's the inconsistency that pisses me off. They had a couple of similar fouls and nothing. How Oster got away with that trip on Rodders when he was getting away in midfield is baffling.

The player Shaun brought down was their 25, who was on the floor more than off it tonight and he definitely threw himself and made a meal of it.

I've a feeling it was him who dived for their penalty in the league game, but can't quite remember.

He also tried to con the ref that Kerr had elbowed him in the face when he went down near the dugout. There was no contact at all. Not something I like to see and there is too much of it in the modern game.

He deserved the booking, he took him down late and stopped a very dangerous attack in the process. Just annoyed me re Oster not getting the same treatment. Thought the ref was alright tonight compared to most we have.

I think gateshead knew the situation and wanted him booking as early as possible, that way, they would have thought his head wouldn't be in the game properly.

Knowing how many yellows he was already on, Hurst should never of played him till the finals

Whether it was a card or not does not matter,

If he had not been booked 14 times before last nights game.

Pearson needs to work on that thought.

Yes, he did well after the booking - certainly kept his head.  And after one booking so early on, Gateshead might have hoped that he would pick up another and they'd get rid of him even sooner.

I think he's our best centre back and believe PH was right to play him last night, rather than 'saving him for Wembley'.  There is no guarantee that we will get there!  At least Shaun was given the chance to help us on our way.  And I agree with Pete - Shaun does need to look at the argumentative side of his game.  Love him as a player - he's not one of these people that needs to get gobby and obnoxious in order to play well.  He does just as well when he's not being gobby.  But I think he will be a bit gutted now, even if he doesn't show it, and will probably think twice about that side of his game next season, without needing to be told.

3 game ban for 15 yellows in a season so no Shaun for final. Unless everyone who says the same are wrong.

Club fines for unnecessary bookings for mouthy dissent required !

Why have a captain's armband if the holder doesn't do the job of talking to the ref ? - it's the equivalent of the shop steward having permission to talk to the company boss.

Likewise - would a captain armband if fitted on Pearson instead of Disley be a pariah to the team?

something that was said in the telegraph a while back said that if pearson gets another yellow it'd only be one game rather than 3

Knowing how many yellows he was already on, Hurst should never of played him till the finals

So we play McDonald and Boyce in the semi's and maybe keep two clean sheets, then you drop one of them to accomodate pearson in the Final ? That is completely wrong and gives out the wrong message to the other players. Pearson unfortunately has received far too many unnecessary bookings this season for dissent and it has come back to haunt him and ultimately us.

He also spoke on BT Vision on the pitch after the game ,

Hoping the lads will win at Wembley for him as he will not be playing again this season.

He also says the telegraph its something he knows has cost him and no one else is to blame its something he will definately address in the future.
