We had 4 points from 3 games last season and got to the play-offs
We had 2 points from 3 games the season before and got to the play-offs

The number of points after 3 games in the previous 8 years were: 1,4,0,4,3,3,4,4

Some of those seasons we did reasonably well and ended in the top half, some of them we either got relegated or nearly got relegated.

The point is that the points total after 3 games has not provided a very accurate guideline as to how the season would go. The only general trend seems to be that we always start quite poorly, whoever the manager is.

We drew the first three games in 2007/08 and ended up 16th in League 2.

If you look at Luton's record last season,  they only won 2 out of their first 8.   Not exactly brilliant.  We knew we'd have trouble for the first few games with the injuries/suspensions we have and Hurst's 'quality over quantity' method he's employing this season.  I think you have to see after 10 games then send out the lynch squad.  UTM

There's still 129 points left to play for, and the bulk of our attacking players are about to return.

I'll take that.

Looking back historically is all well and good , it's 2014  . Nostalgia could be more harmful , looking and knowing what we had . Just wondering , being 60+  does it hurt me more than say someone who's 25/30 who hasn't seen or known the good times ?

At least we have those memories Doc, these youngsters dont.
I remember when I was young in the 60s and 70s older friends and relatives going on about their heroes and Town in then div 2 (now championship). These were back in the dark days of Bobby Kennedy, before Lawrie.   Thank God for John Newman, George Kerr and Alan Buckley eh

These are the memories that can never be taken away from you or me . My cousin removing his white bed sheet and  painting "Champions of division 4" during the short Lawrie era . Getting the biggest clout from his mum .

Our first trip to Wembley , never believing I would ever see town grace the hallowed turf  . My friend saying , " Now I can die a happy man to have seen us there and win "

The years in the championship beating teams with beautiful football  . Nearly in tears now just thinking about it . I just hope we can get out of this pit of dispair before I get called up to the big main stand in the sky .

That's the season I started watching town. The highlight to me was watching us beat Hull at BP 1-0 and the draw with West Ham.

Proves nothing Rob. As someone else pointed out, seasons we went up (bar 97- we had more points from early games.

The last 10 seasons ALL ended in failure IN LOW DIVISIONS.

5: stuck in tier 4 (last one by the skin of or teeth cos Luton got docked 30 points)
1: relegated from tier 4
4: stuck in tier 5

The point is we have dropped 4 points from games against poor opposition, games that any promotion contenders would be expected to win, those four points may prove to be very costly at the end of the season, and could be the the difference between automatic promotion and a play off place.

Have you considered that, given a similar injury crisis themselves, some of the other promotion contenders may well drop points against some of the smaller clubs in the division?

I'm in the business of re-habilitating Mr Kennedy (to a certain extent). He wasn't manager during the dreadful 68/69 re-election season. Everything "clicked" on the field for Town at the back of the 70/71 season when they avoided having to apply for re-election again after a fantastic end of season run (including a 4-0 win at promotion hopefuls Northampton). It also, it has to be said corresponded with him relinquishing the playing side of his role.  The club had no money yet he built a "squad" that, by and large (only Thompson, Chatterley and Gauden from memory were added by McMenemy the latter two during the season) was that which went on that great opening run.
Where he "failed" was that he didn't have the charisma to get the Town buzzing but Lawrie himself has, in the past, paid tribute to the man who gave him the players to work with....

And the last spell

There was something realy wrong about his last spell in charge,, either no money, or not the players about to buy/get. or he would not have made some of the signings he made.
Now we have some good players again now, and i believe that if he had these players we would be playing better football and more exciting to.  Imo Mr hurst is a very good defence coach  and that is it. Not a team manager , We need someone that can fire the players up, make them proud to wear the shirt and show it. We need a leader.. not a bully or a quiate lets just get on with it type of man.. I remember when laurie mac was here, he took the players out to the fans, on the dock at 6am, and showed them what there fans did for a living . and said this is what waits for you if you fail in your football life ,, did it help  you bet it did

In reply to maringer,to rely on those factors t takes our destiny out of our own hands, that is something winners do not have to rely on.

As the saying goes, it's a marathon, not a sprint. It is pretty rare for a team to absolutely run away with the League as Luton did last season so you always tend to get the title contenders slipping up here and there in games that they are expected to win.

43 matches still to play and hopefully, there will be very few of them in which we have such injury problems as for the first 3 games.

Hurst has been in charge for 43 games,

During that period we have score 58 goals,

That must tell him where we are going wrong,

Stop looking for a  left back on loan Paul,

AND

Find that  goal scorer we are lacking.

There here already Pete in the form of Connell, Hannah and Pitman, they all have a decent goal scoring record but can`t seem to repeat it here yet

Most people agree we have a better squad this season than last, and we made the playoffs then.

So I am not worried after 3 games unbeaten with an injury and suspension ravaged squad.

Should that be our ultimate ambition to make the playoffs? Does not seem indicative of a Positive Mental Attitude.

Sometimes you just get the feeling it's all going to go pear shaped  .   Are Gateshead going to be the new Tamworth . We are known to them  by players and the manager too well . Really sad that I'm worried about  us playing Gateshead .

I didn't say that.

I think a play off spot should be our minimum objective, and I believe we can do that again with this sqaud.

Whether we are in the running for automatic prpmotion depends whether, as has happened for three of the last four seaons, we get a runaway leader that is ouit of sight.

The goal has to be to win every game. That's the mindset we need.

But to win games you have to score and we seem devoid of any plan other than plan A, long balls to L.J.L. plan B is stick with plan A.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you give him an excuse for him to escape from the wife and kids for the weekend and drink lots of beer.

Except, of course, on the occasions when we pass it through midfield and try and get in behind the opposition. Here's a clue: we've missed a number of good chances this season from crosses so we're pretty obviously not playing long ball all the time. We do play it long too often, but it's ridiculous to claim this is all that we do.

Hopefully, we'll be able to have a bit more penetration down the wings now we actually have a couple of wingers available to play.

Yes but have you noticed how many crosses have gone in and there are non of our players in the penalty area.

Well, yes. That's a failing of the strikers (and sometimes the crosser), not of the system.

It drives me nuts the way that none of our strikers ever seem to make near post runs as crosses tend to be underhit more often than overhit. In fact, last season, I only really remember Rodman nicking a couple in from near post crosses. This is something which can be coached to some extent, I suppose, but it is also something that pretty much any striker should know to do as matter of course.

Its concerning we are not taking our chances but we are creating some and we've played reasonably well considering the missing personnel.   What im more concerned about is the slow starts we need to keep pressing the opposition regardless who they are, keep putting them under pressure why they didn't do this at home could be done to nerves and maybe scared to make a mistake allowing the fans to moan.  Keep the ball moving attack at every opportunity dont let the opposition have a breather and get the fans off their seat in appreciation.

I've seen it at BP off and on (mostly on) for the last 30 years !

Here's some others I've seen over that duration too...
Dropping deep
Protecting leads
Only really start playing when we're a goal down.
Beating (or nearly beating) the very best teams on our day when the crowd is really up for it
