Just been on the BBC website for the latest footy news when i came across Good old Charlie on the Home page. It's an article about him and past/present English footballers playing abroad.
Quite a good read. Wish he still was here.

Nice article and it will be interesting to see if he does well enough out on loan to get himself into the Elche first team next season. The right attitude to want to play matches, which some young players in this country don't seem interested in doing.

He doesn't have a bad word to say about GTFC either, which gives some perspective.

Yeah, i liked the way he was shaping up, never mind....if he was still here he would still be behind another loanee in the pecking order so best for him that he moved on.

And you know this, how? As I'Anson was playing pretty regularly before he left, I'd imagine he'd have been playing pretty regularly over the past 2 seasons as well, probably even enough to establish himself as a first choice defender.

But, hey, no reason for you not to have another dig at Hurst. Heaven knows, there haven't been enough of those on this board over the past week or two.

I'm afraid there's about to be another one. It was known I'anson was offered a petty wage by us to stay, almost entirely the reason he cleared off, I can tell you that is a fact. The way he asserted himself with us, showed commitment to actually come over and play for us was commendable. He played well and looked a very good prospect.

Then for Hurst last year to rip the guys abilities to shreds in the fans forum when I'anson had just made 6 appearances in a league far greater than Hurst has ever achieved was totally embarrassing & unwarranted. The fact I'anson doesn't mention the managers at Grimsby, just the club shows to me how he must feel about Scott & Hurst. I know if a manager had said something like that about me I wouldn't have had that much restraint not to have a dig back.

As a club we should be proud of what he is achieving and all the luck in the world to him.

My god, we would rather support players who are no longer here than get behind those that are. Good luck to him but he is not relevant to the present squad and will have no effect on our efforts to get promotion.

If I recall correctly, he said something along the lines that Charlie had the worst left foot he had seen in a footballer

I remember reading about Hurst's apparent comments on here and wondering what all that was about. Seemed a very odd thing to say about a player who had left the club some time before and I did wonder if he was being serious about it? I do wonder why there was any bad blood there?

Terrible left foot, not technically gifted at all & bad attitude are the things that stood out. There was more, though i'm not sure if I could manage to find the actual recording.

I think that is a massive exaggeration, I'm sure he said he was surprised where he had ended up and didn't think he was technically gifted.

For the record I think it was a crime to let him go and it comes down to the offer made to him by the club, he had already demonstrated at 18 that he was more than capable of playing at this level.

FWIW I'm guessing we should have kept him too.
In any case what you CAN say for sure is central defenders don't appear to be a major problem right now.

Has our back four improved since he left?? Simple answer is yes.

There seems to be a huge obsession with players that are no longer with us than the ones that are here at present.

Move on, the lads got a club, he's earning a wage and he may get in their first team at some point. More likely after this season when they've been relegated...

Good for him.  I remember PH being asked about him in the fans' forum (I think the question was about whether we could get some sort of payment for him) and I thought his response, questioning his technique and doubting his ability, was chippy, bitter and lacking in class.  It was embarrassing to listen to something like that coming out of the football club.

Thank you aldi_01 for bringing some sense into the thread! I'anson is not IMHO big enough or strong enough to cope with the strikers in the Conference! He reminds me of Simon Ramsden! He had similar issues when we were in League Two!

He isn't relevant but one of the people who thought he wasn't good enough is highly relevant.

Even I could tell he was a talent worth keeping.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

No point saying "we should have kept him", or for that matter "should have kept Cameron Jerome" or "Should have kept Ryan Bennett" or "Should have kept John Oster".  Quality players will move on.

Maybe his football style was more suited to Spain than Conference Hoofball.  This is part of the reason we have this conversation every two years about why England don't produce decent technical footballers: "Not strong enough", "Needs to fill out/beef up", "Too fancy".

No-one's messed up or done anything wrong.  He moved on, developing his game in one of the top leagues in the world, and he's done well.  I really hope he gets back into La Liga soon and that more young English players try their hand abroad (although Spain isn't really abroad for I'Anson!)

I'd imagine I'Anson is a bit stronger now that before but personally, I never thought he had the pace to be successful at a higher level.

Perhaps he is a bit quicker than I thought. It will be interesting to see if he ever does make it in the top division of La Liga. Would be a real achievement if he could.

I'm not quite sure they are all comparable. We got money for Oster & Bennett and Jerome was much younger & it was leaving us that made him the player he is.

With I'anson we had a good player who we just let walked away, it wasn't as though he had Elche lined up. He left because of the shite offer we gave him to stay and therefore we engineered our own mistake on that one.
