I have received this request from Dean in New Zealand. I have sent him the basic stats on Sid and some scans of team photos. Has anyone got anything to add? Post here if you do.

I wonder if you would be so kind as to help us
We are direct decendants of sid wheelhouse former grimsby town full back and
captain originating from bishop aukland we as a family are heavily into
family and all it stands for
with the anniversary of WW1 and as christmas approaches and thoughts of the
christmas day truce and the football game on no mans land beween the
opposing troops germany v england we want to do as much as we can to
preserve the stories and the memories of these brave men and footballers
We are next week off to couin in arras france along with a bbc crew to do a
piece regarding sid and the footballers battalion and the christmas day
truce
We were wondering if we can be involved with any plans you have to
commemerate our brave soldiers of the great war
and of course we would love to have you involved in any way the army can

Sid was a corporal in the 17th Middlesex regiment the footballers battalion
but sadly paid the ultimate price in arras the Somme
he played in the army cup final during the war and was on the winning side
at the final whistle
for which silver winners medals were to be awarded but befor sid could
receive hid he was killed by gas but there is also a very heroic story to
this

Would recommend the book "When The Whistle Blows" by Andrew Riddoch. Sid gets a mention in that

Codalmighty did a three part article on him a few years back: I have been half planning a trip to visit his grave ever since I read it.

The link is to part 1, it leads to the other parts:

We was fortunate enough to have several members of Sid's family here for our Armistice Day event on the 11th November. Sid's grandson laid a wreath on behalf of the 1914 Grimsby Town Squad and his grandfather who passed away as a result of gassing on the 19th September 1916.

Sid's family kindly gave me a signed copy of the book "Over the Line". Sid is mentioned in this book on numerous occasions and the book is a great read. I started it yesterday and could not put it down until I had finished.

16 million military and civilian lives lost! Regardless of the merits or reasons for war, we should never forget the immense sacrifice that they made. Hero's every one of them, bravery beyond words for a war that gained no benefit.
