I never want to see town lose but pray to god we get knocked out by gateshead in this next round and solely concentrate on the league. Its tinpot money and hasn't majority helped us in the past has it? I kind of get this feeling that its hurst vs the fans again, he knows its vital we go up and the fans no its vital we do too and avoid any slip ups like the last time we went on a huge run to the final and messed up the play offs, but yet he is adamant we win the trophy.

I used to think in hursty we trust but right now I haven't got the trust in no-one at gtfc and if we don't go up, I shall revert to watching Cleethorpes Town full-time instead.

This tin pot cup is our level now unlike the side we beat at Wembley in 98 who are up at the top of the Championship and playing Liverpool in the league cup tonight.
Just Wondering why the massive  difference between the fortunes of both clubs over that time.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

What a can of worms that could bring up . My own view is  , well , bad decisions at the highest level  , or decisions that appeared right at the time but failed miserably .  Or just really bad luck , take your pick .

Yeah it was, many times.

Our major shareholder said that the debts we had were to him and the taxman. We would still have to pay the entire tax bill and for him to enter administration would mean that the debt to him would be taken from asset stripping the club, which he wasn't prepared to do. Going into administration would have saved us nothing in real terms, merely lost the clubs assets and him a significant percentage of his investment, which he has stated many times is the much maligned "benign debt" (I think this is correct from my recollection of the statements he has made over the years. Correct me if there are other things I have misinterpreted or are plain wrong...)

If Bournemouth didn't have some Russian investor come in a few years back , it's highly likely they'd be playing in the southern league now instead of playing the scousers tonight .

The way Leicester City went about it always annoys me. Think they owed the best part of 100m. Gary Lineker and co steps in and its all wiped.

Hey ho its xmas and they'll be getting relegated in May anyhow

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

There's a lot more than that.  I produced a list of clubs in the top 5 Divisions at the time who have gone into administration over the years. Very, very surprising the number who have (some 2 or even 3 times).

On the other hand at least half a dozen have ceased to exist for at least a period in any form, and several others have had to start from scratch in the depths of non-league. Administration is Russian Roulette, there's no guarantee you'll come out of it better off.

Still doesn't detract from the matter that  they have used the system to gain some sort of financial advantage . The likes of Farsley Weymouth Maidstone Salisbury aren't what you would call footballing hotbeds , living within your means and playing by the rules doesn't appear to be in the majority of these teams vocabulary .

I reckon there are 10 clubs on that list that either no longer exist or have spawned a phoenix club.

Newport, Aldershot, Maidstone, Chester, Halifax, Wimbledon, Darlington, Farsley, Salisbury and R&D.

At the end of the day though it's pretty pointless debating what would have happened had we gone into admin as we'll never know now. We could well have become another Southampton, Leicester or even Bournemouth but then again we could also just as easily have become another Chester, Maidstone or Rushden & Diamonds.

A well balanced view on the whole administration scenario , Les. It's the great unknown and it's easier to quote teams that have done ok out of it and ignore those that have suffered.

If someone offered you the chance to be financially secure but with a 1 in 6 chance that you would cease to exist if you took it, what would you choose?

Yes , but these chairmen have got into this situation by their own mismanagement and bad decisions usually with other people's money . Easy way out for them and they very rarely loose out .

well our chairman/director didn’t, our problems started with ITV digital collapsing, (not under fenty,s watch) He inherited the debt and then found a solution by cost cutting and making the football club run within means and financing out of his own pocket, the football fortune, lady luck has deserted us in the last 10 years, but i believe we are on the up now. Like I said and you are saying , living within your means . We have been unlucky to a point , but we have been sensible , and we are where we are because of it . We will never know if we had splashed the cash on unaffordable players where we would be now . However I will repeat it hasn't done some clubs too much damage .

We are all fed up of this horrible league , we aren't playing attractive named teams , we aren't watching attractive football  . Hopefully this season , my Christmas wish .

I have to go with a lot of that. League has to be the priority.Dont mind if we go on a run if we use fringe players and youths to get match time and experience

FFS when will people stop flipping going on about ITV money. There where many others in the same position as Town at the time and done ok since, FFS get over it.
" Making the Football club run within it means" oh Ye that's why we have so much debt at the moment.
"Lady luck has deserted us in the last 10 years" balderdash good stewardship and good decision making at vital times has deserted us in the last 10 years.
I have been thinking why Bournmouth are now a million times better of than us the reason is they have had better decision makers at the top.

It may well have but ive not seen them being headline news spending vast amounts on this player and that player.
It just seems to me good decision making has got them where they are now.

In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions.
Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them.

They spent £3m on Callum Wilson in the summer.

That said, they were promoted from League 2 (whilst we were being relegated from it) a year before he bought the club.

well our chairman/director didn’t, our problems started with ITV digital collapsing, (not under fenty,s watch) He inherited the debt and then found a solution by cost cutting and making the football club run within means and financing out of his own pocket, the football fortune, lady luck has deserted us in the last 10 years, but i believe we are on the up now. UTM

Are you a certain gentleman in disguise or may I have some of the pills you are taking.

First of all as already commented many other teams were caught up in the ITV Digital collapse but I don't seem them all floundering in non league.

Secondly please explain how we are living within our means yet having to be funded by the chairman, sorry ex chairman.

Your sums just don't add up.

PS Lady luck had nothing to do with the appalling decision to make Neil Woods manager, unless she was on the board at the time.
