That A180 must be chock-a-block with journos coming to write about Grimsby....

If you have a spare 20 minutes, read this piece in the London Review of Books (no less....) about our town.

There are plenty of well known local names interviewed (including John Fenty) as well as some interesting insight into the internal politicking of both UKIP and Labour in Grimsby.

Thanks for posting that. It was a great read, if a little depressing.

Yep, a little depressing but quite interesting.

The fact that so many former socialists are apparently supporting UKIP around here is just incredible to me. Talk about doing a deal with the devil - the only way UKIP MPs would vote is with a Conservative government so going against all your other political beliefs just to get a referendum on Europe seems to be too much.

Have to admit that one point I apparently agree on is that renewables (mostly wind turbines) aren't the correct direction to be heading for secure energy sources. Utility-level energy storage is still orders of magnitude too expensive with current technology (unless you happen to be near an area which has geology suitable for hydroelectric) so renewables will only be able to operate on top of baseload provided by coal or gas (or nuclear). As long as this remains the case, the subsidies going into renewables will be a waste of money.

That said, as wind farms seem to be the flavour of the month at the moment it would be nice if some of the money and jobs flooding into the market could provide benefits to the N.E. Lincs area. I'd much rather we had a nuclear power station instead, but I suppose that would be too much to ask!

Very good article. Good read.

Wonder if there's a way of making use of all this attention after the election's over.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
