Good luck to him. Based purely on the fact he is from here I had hoped we may be in for him.

Any thoughts? I know he's young, but his footballing history stands up..

We need a right wing back, is he the kind to fit the bill...?

How do you work that one out? We don't play wing backs and we have 2 right sided full backs already.

He probably hasn't got his head right if he's been released by City !
For me playing for your home town club would be the best move for any player with some talent wanting to cut his teeth and make it as a pro , the support he'd get from the fans here would be just what the doctor ordered.if his head and his heart aren't in it though then we don't want him

Could be a good opportunity to sign a local lad who's had world class coaching played in the fast aggressive Scots prem league and possess loads of ability, in reality probably lined up a northern club ?

Do we need another right sided player when we have have Tait & East plus Arnold and Mackreth??

IMO any money available should be spent elsewhere in the team

If he's better than what we have and would be willing to play for us, then why not?  If we could afford it that is. Maybe send Mackreth out on loan.

Lots of if's and but's.

With him being released outside a transfer window, would we even be able to sign him before January? As far as I'm aware climbs clubs can only sign free agents outside the transfer window if they were released while the window was still open?

I think non-contract terms don't count as per normal contract, hence he won't have been released as such.  As he didn't have an actual contract he's free to sign for anyone.

If that makes sense?

Dunno.

More importantly the question is surely do we need him?

I think we've got plenty of cover down the right flank.

Given his footballing education and his apparent willingness, wouldn't it be a bit remiss to not have a look at the kid in the reserves, providing there's some money in the budget of course, to potentially sign him. You can say we have plenty of cover on the right but if he would improve our side it would have to be worth it.

Apologies if he's already signed elsewhere.

Can't believe someone gave you a cross for this!  Seems a no-brainier for me (if he's back home of course).  Let him train with the club, play in the reserves as a trialist if possible and see how good he is.

The idea that we've got "enough cover down the right side" is daft if there's someone available who will improve the team, bring him in and move someone on.  He doesn't need to be that great to be better than Macreth.

Maybe he's not defensive enough for the tinkerman?

I've switched the ticks and crosses function off. I don't know why the forum has it, it's petty and probably reduces the level of debate.

He could be the sort of player, like Bogle, who could make us a few bob in the future. I think he's worth a look with a view not just to this season, and having enough cover, but beyond (if he's actually decent of course). I think I certainly would but Paul Hurst clearly has his reasons not to.

I'm sure I read somewhere he has played right back too so could well have good defensive attributes. Who knows, don't think anyone on the forum has actually seen him play.

Are we only suggesting we sign him because he's from this area? Do we need another wide player? Is he any good? Why doesn't anyone else want him?

Not for me

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

I think if you actually read some of the posts on here some are merely suggesting that the club take a look at him and see if he would improve the team.

The club often complains that our location is an issue when trying to sign players.  If he's back home we have a player who Man City took a punt on so he clearly has 'something', so I can't understand why we wouldn't invite him to training / get him involved in some reserve games if we can and take a look.

IF he would improve the team then try and sign him.  IF he isn't good enough then the club haven't lost anything.

The idea that we shouldn't even look at the lad because we have "enough" right sided / wide players is daft beyond belief.

A squad should be continually improved. If this lad is good enough and not expensive get him in. If he's better than Mackreth and improves the team then by signing him we've improved.

So I expect you are right

As Ileft the Upper yesterday, I went down the executive exit to go down the stairs near  McMenemys, as I passed one of the executive boxes the door opened and who was coming out??

Non other than Adam Drurys dad!!

Conspiracy theory in overdrive?

I was sat in the upper Findus and I saw Thomas Turgoose.

So are we signing him up or not?

I said a couple of weeks ago that I didn't think we needed anyone on the right hand side. But on reflection, the chance to sign up a local lad with a fantastic pedigree who is still young could be a chance we can't turn down. Would Hurst be willing to ship Mackreth out to accomodate him? Probably not...
