Liverpool keeper penalised for holding onto the ball for too long.    I thought that this rule had been quietly ditched.  A lot of keepers have been holding on to the ball for longer than Mingolet did tonight.  To add insult to injury they scored from the free kick.

20+ seconds, far too long really. I applaud any attempt to keep the game moving, bit tough to concede from it but sends out a warning.

More than 3 times the allowed length of time - even for a law that everyone's forgotten about that's taking the piss!

That's my point.  I'm sure  I've seen keepers take just as long but nothing has been done. Sat in the lower findus we've commented more than once about the time keepers have held on to the ball. The common view was the rule had been scrapped altogether. Now we find that it is still the law. Will be interesting to see if keepers still hold on to the ball for as long.

They made a mess of that law from the start. I believe it states the keeper can only hold on to it for "5 or 6 seconds". It actually phrases it like that, 5 or 6 seconds. Either way it's too short and hence why it's largely ignored. Having said that, the spirit of the law was to keep the game flowing which it has largely succeeded in doing.

The ref should take a leaf out of the rugby union game,

There the ref tells the players to play it or stay back,

If they do not obey its a pen.

I think that 5 - 6 seconds is right, but the ref has the discretion to allow a bit more to allow the penalty area to clear for example.

Where it breaks down is that it has become a tool for time wasting, and referees have ignored it, thinking that if they allow a bit extra because the keeper can.t get rid quickly, then they have to allow the same time frame every time.

The refs should warn the keeper, then if he persists, give the free kick. It would soon stop.

It isn't rocket science, unless you're a ref in the National League that is.
