Wood had a good pre-season so I can sort of understand why Hattons on the bench, but Pond for Miller is a surprise.

Surely would've just missed out if that was the case...?
Managers think his mind is elsewhere so decided to go with Pond, maybe?

I think we've gone more tough than stylish for the opening game against what we saw last year, a strong, physical southport team.

Me too. Surprised and a bit disappointed. Hard to comment on the Miller thing as we don't know how 'imminent' the arrival of his baby is. Can only think that the managers must believe that Southport will be big and strong and that this is more suited to Wood and Artus and not Hatton and Soares. I would probably have started with Elding alongside Cook too. There is a home game in 3 days to follow, so maybe it's a horses for courses thing, and we might see a different line-up on Tuesday. Depends on today's result I guess. I hope the team selection doesn't backfire.

Exactly it's defensive.
I agree with Wood.
As for Artus yes it's 4-4-2 but guess it's a case of changing shape to having 3 in the middle when required.
Is that right or wrong ? Swings and roundabouts but not too suprised it's 0-0 even though we might have scored.

Goals win points and games not clean sheets.
If we score another we most probably won't need to keep a clean sheet.

Whilst mistakes can never be justified, if they're gonnAhappen, do em in the first couple of games, not the last couple when theres a hell of a lot riding on it...I do feel though that this won't be the only mistake wood makes. Yes well know he has a never say die attitude etc but that doesn't make you a good footballer...assuming it was a silly foul, today probably proves once and for all that he should ever get near the midfield...

I suspect hatton may get a game on Tuesday.

Wood is a massive liability. Might do some of the smaller things right and show a fight for the shirt. But, at the end of the day, he makes a couple of big, stupid mistakes every single game and they cost points from when in his position.

Hatton has to start the next game.

A draw in a tricky away game on the opening day of the season? Most teams in the division would take that.

A solid enough start to build on.
Posted by: TonySmith, August 11, 2012, 5:06pm; Reply: 186
Disappointed to concede so late as it's a familiar pattern that we need to put right as those points can make a huge difference at the end of the season, but look at the big picture. It certainly sounds like we were the better team over the 90 minutes, and a solid 1-1 draw away from home against a team that finished above us last season is hardly a disaster. Actually, it's a pretty good result that most of us would have settled for before the game. Draw away, win at home and you won't be too far away. So let's get the win on Tuesday!!

Not too unhappy overall, but it's the manner of the conceding. Just glad the opening day has come and gone, at least we weren't the victims of the usual freaky games.I'd just hoped that the old conceding of the opponents only chance on goal would go away, well let's make sure that we've seen the last of it.

Just on the train home now. In summary it was an abysmal 1st half,we were great for ten minutes of the 2nd half during which we scored and the Bradley Wood gave away a needless free kick with a push/drag and they scored. We looked like a bunch of players who havent gelled as a team yet but hopefully it will come. Derek Niven looks handy. Attempts at doing the poznan need stopping too,we arent Man City.

I have to agree. It's disappointing to be five minutes from victory and drop two points but it's hardly a bad result. Some of the doom and gloom on this thread is a little odd. Mind, Mansfield fans are in despair and Luton's aren't overjoyed; so overreaction is not restricted to Lincolnshire.

A goal up Town will defend, a goal down they'll attack. (generally but especially away)
Whatever the merits of a point you can't say it hasn't happened for donkeys years.

I predict as long as people keep trying to defend and protect everything off the pitch, the team will do the same and it will backfire.
I guess people think they're helping the club by always defending everything.
Personally I think they're helping sow the seeds of our own underachievement in the process and part of the underlying problem ala lowering expectations.

The people who keep banging on about the importance of "clean sheets" (at 1-0 in control !  :o) sum up everything that is floored with our approach.

A lot is made of fans wrongly criticizing players(ok it shouldn't be unconstructive) but NEVER criticize them they're probably gonna shy away from taking a risk or being brave when it matters most.
Instead they'll keep dropping back deep trying to hang on knowing full well if it all goes wrong they'll be defended anyway.
Managers aren't without some blame either IMO - it's getting more and more like "safety first" (except it puts us in greater danger) and I doubt whether preparing excuses in advance talking up the opposition helps much either.

Not saying we can't be up there but when the chips are down I doubt if I will be brimming with confidence we will deliver.
Roll on two winnable home games...

With so many new players in they will need to gel, lets hope its sooner rather than later.
Feel sorry for Wood but ultimately poor decision making can be the difference.

I think some of the comments are a bit OTT. After a scrappy first half where neither side played well, Town grew into the fame 2nd half and gradually took control, which resulted in a 15 minute spell where we put Southport under increasing pressure. We got the goal we deserved, and should have seen the game out. However Brad makes a rash (and I have to say absolutely needless) challenge to gift southport a free kick in a dangerous area. You just knew what was coming and sure enough an unmarked header for the equaliser.

For a side that were never under pressure for 90 minutes to concede so late is disappointing, it's not the end of the world and most of us would have taken a point before the game. Brad won't need anyone to tell him that his mistake cost him, I felt for him a bit because he'd played well up til then.

Overall I'm not too disappointed, and with 2 winnable home games coming up back to back, we have a chance to get someearly points on the board.

A 1-1 draw away at against a top half of the table side on opening day of the season. A side who we lost too last year, it aint too bad, its an improvement!
Posted by: Maringer, August 11, 2012, 8:03pm; Reply: 222
Yep - their equaliser came from two mistakes. One to give away the free-kick, the other to allow a free header. Cut either of those out and they don't get the goal.

I'm hoping to see our defence become more and more miserly as the season goes on because we conceded way too many soft goals last season. I'd like to see the defence winning lots of points instead of relying on Hearn to save our bacon.

Exactly. Wood seems to be the new boo boy. I think people forget he's only 19/20 he's got alot of time to learn/improve. Hopefully won't be another local lad who gets his confidence shattered through a minority of detractors.

Bradley Wood will be 21 in 3 weeks. He's also not local, he grew up in Leicester. He is a serviceable back-up left/right back and I have no problem with him filling in when required. He should not however be starting in place of Hatton, who is clearly the better and more experienced player.

Brad Wood was superbv today, other than that one moment of madness. Him and hatton are 2 very differant players, you can say that hatton wouldnt of gave away that foul but then on the other hand brad wood threw himself into vital challenges today that hatton (let alone anyone in their right mind  ;D) wouldnt of.

Wouldn't argue with your first sentence.

Your second is pure conjecture. Fact is Wood DID give the ball away.

Not you Bradz but can we pleese not have the "He's young time to learn" line. He has always had the "ability" for a moment of madness. His apparent inability to learn from his mistakes is worrying....

I don't know if you were there but for the first 80+ minutes there was absolutely no indication that he was the wrong choice....

Unfortunatly i couldnt go today, as i was denied leave off work, and i only got to listen to the first half during my break today. All i can say is a big well done to the amazing amount of fans who made the journey, you sounded amazing, you are a credit to this club, and one of the main reasons why i love this club so much.
Despite the dissapointment at the end of the game, its not a losing start, its away from home, and that last minute goal might be the kick up the bottom that we need to pick up for a great start.

Onwards and Upwards, and, see you Tuesday night.

Even before kick off thought Wood would start and Hatton would start Tuesday.
Why ?
Southport - away game big team needs better defending ability (see bigger picture)
Stockport - home game needs attacking players to unlock defences.

I guess Hatton will come back Tuesday and if so, sure some will take it as Wood being dropped.
But if it happens don't think it will be any reflection on Bradley Wood today whatseover.
Just a change of personnel to fit the opposition.

Not for one minute was it a wrong choice to play Bradley wood today he was outstanding. Some of the challenges he put his body into was just amazing, there best player by a mile is Whaley and he didn't even get a sniff, brad left his mark on him straight away and Whaley just went missing.. Brad made a mistake yes he would be first to admit maybe he should have just cleared it.? But all this shite it's woods fault blar blar blar what about pond where was he when grand scored? It was his man for the goal. Ok brad made the foul but the ball has to travel into the box. Basic man marking. People saying if hatton was playing that foul wouldn't have taken place, isn't that the same then if miller was playing would grand have got a free header? Don't see many talking about the good things he did like keeping Whaley silent like clearing his lines many a time though out the game etc.. But no all most seem to want to do is slate the lad..

Just for the record again, Bradley wood was excellent today and for me can be forgiven for the 1 error.

Haha no just think I understand their thinking to some degree.

But we'll see Tuesday - maybe Wood will start.
Must admit I've never been a fan of dropping players after making a mistake though in this case he had a good game.
So hopefully his confidence won't be in danger of dropping if he's left out.

Can't believe poeple leaving Niven out, IMO he was just shaded out by S Pearson for MOTM. He broke up countless Southport attacks and got forward a fair bit too. On one occasion he was in ten opposition box and witching seconds was back in our box getting in a vital block, excellent!

Every team needs a Dereck Niven!

I also think they may have got the attendance slightly wrong as the away stand held 1000 and was not far from being full, but there were also quite a lot of Town fans in the seated main stand. I'd guess there was closer to 1000 there yesterday!

Pro's and cons though mate, very time he got the ball adter breaking up an attack, you just knew he was going to play a terrible pass or do something stupid and there was once or twice when aswad had gone forward he offered to cover at lb and got skinned for pace, hes so so so slow. I know thats not his job but i thought he was frustrating to watch. Very Manny Panther esqe, fit for purpose but pretty dog toffie taking everything into account, i feel he qould have been useful early last season when we needed protection from midfield for maniacs like ridley and kempson, however our defence is arguably one of the  strongest in the league now so why not think more attacking in midfield with Thanoj who can offer better distribution to the strikers. He did nearly shut me up with a screamer from outsode the box though lol.

ANYWAY... My team for Stockport would be.

Macca
Wood
Pearson (Mom last game)
Miller if fit if not then Pond
Thomas
Colbeck
Disley
Thanoj
Soares
Hearn if fit if not then Elding
Cook

Subs: Pearson ( was often 1 in 1 and looked very leggy in attack, did not look match fit)
Niven
Hatton
Artus
Southwell

Completely see your point.

Suppose I was thinking Thanoj needs to be involved at some point and with Disley as captain(not that it means he's automatic choice) and Niven having suffered from slight fatigue in close successive games before, it's a tough call whether to play Niven or a more attacking minded player.
Being at home you'd hope there'd be less need to have to break up play (but perhaps not).
We'll see what happens,
I'd probably throw Thanoj in for Niven myself but it's a close call.

because Scott and Hurst know what they're talking about, where as us fans don't really

Speak for yourself !

Right let's clear this up then....
Some people know what they're talking about and some don't but it's all down to opinions.

You seem to thinks moaning is always unhelpful but I would argue constructive criticism can be helpful for people to take stock and improve. (should they agree)
But if everyone is always gonna say a big "well done" regardless, there's at least a possibility people may contiune to tread the wrong path thinking they're on the right one or feel any need to "raise their game" for the general good of the club on the pitch.

It's all well and good complaining about "journeymen" once players have left, but defend them when they don't deserve it, there's always the danger they will start taking the proverbial or do only as much as they need to.

To be clear I wholeheartedly disgaree with "moaners" who make unconstructive comments like "season over" but at the end of the day they're entitled to their opinion whether we agree or not.
At the very least, fans have a right to express an opinion or be heard even if we think it may be complete and utter sh1te.

For me Gary, too many people like you seem to want to control ever so called "negative" comment as if it somehow means it's gonna be the end of the world should they simply choose to ignor it.
At the end of the day most people are intelligent enough they can see who's making a fair point and who clearly isn't.

Quoted from Gary Haddock
we say stupid things like we could do better when in actual fact we know we can't.

We were 3 minutes away from doing better - that's the whole point.
Don't you see that criticism doesn't necessarily mean it's all doom and gloom for the future but that we're not a thousand miles away from where things could be so much better ?
If that's not postive I don't know what is !

Quoted from Gary Haddock
And not saying people can't have an opinion just think with it being so early and yet so many negative views already, it's hardly encouraging is i?

Don't get your point here.
If you're saying your hopes for the season are based on others opinions then you've lost me.
I'm sure success will ultimately boil down to S&H.
As for this "people will be put off" argument I don't partcularly buy it.
Results are ultimately the main factor on attendances so as always, it's important we get things right on the pitch.

Sorry but living in a fantasy world where no-one is able to ever be fairly criticized doesn't make for a healthy fan base (IMO).
But like I said if people want their moan then I would hope they do it on a messageboard than at the match.

Not at all. I'm attempting to add balance to an otherwise biased debate. He was excellent yesterday until the 86th minute and had he continued would have been my choice for MOTM. Bradley and Pond allowed Southport out of jail yesterday between them. If we are serious about promotion we HAVE to cut out those type of mistakes. Other Town players have been assassinated on here for much less.

Surprised that after an opening day away draw against a side that finished a few places above us last season that some people would make 5 or 6 changes to the starting line up?

Scott seemed to indicate he was pleased with the performance, if not the result and how the equaliser came about, and I'd therefore expect an odd tweak rather than wholesale changes.

I think everyone who went felt Wood had an excellent game for 86 minutes, the frustration of some is that the type of error he made was something we have seen for the last few seasons. Don't think it is an assasination of the player, just fans expressing their views in a passionate way.

We all want the same thing. Success on the field of play and back into the Football league.

It will be a hard task but IF all the fans can get behind the team from the off tomorrow, make BP an intimidating place for visiting sides, we have a chance.

Come on get to BP and support the team in black and white

THIS !

would maybe take Disley off and put Pond in CM and Miller in CB

but apart from that i would keep it as it is.

we was the better team, and they had 1 shot on target ?

We stopped Whalley ? playing, who is a good player in this league.

if they didnt score, everyone would be over the moon, see the bigger picture, we did well

I'd take Disley and Niven out, yes I am crazy.

My midfield four would be Coulbeck Thanoj Artus Soares for the Stockport game. Also Hatton in for Wood, only because Hatton is a better ball player than Wood.

Yes you are, we played well on Saturday and the only player who stopped us scoring more than one goal and winning the game was their keeper.
Only changes I would make is Elding for Pearson to start and Soares on during the game

Not sure about 5 or 6 but don't think it would necessarily be any reflection of underperformance if changes happened.

Whilst Scott has indicated players may be dropped if they don't perform, I think a few could simply be changed because of the opposition and playing at home.

I'm thinking Hatton, Soares and possibly Thanoj will fit into the more attacking lineup.
If Elding comes in for Pearson I guess it's cos he's won the shirt.

Understand some people always want a settled team(so do I tbh) but early days and it's a squad affair too - the more who can positiviely chip to the cause and share the weight (if it's the right time for them to be invloved) the better for me.

Garth, you might think it's crazy but we've already seen Niven put in a storming performance pre-season but then appear to be suffering from the fatigue of those exertions next game.
No idea if the same could happen again but there's no prizes on offer for not anticipating these things if there's any danger !

At the end of the day you can just keep playing play the same players until they member up but there's no prizes for closing the stable door after the horse had bolted either.

No reason we're aware of to say Niven shouldn't keep his place (certainly deserves it), but don't see the value in expecting 11 players to play 46 games week in week out whilst the others sit about twiddling their thumbs (roll on reserve games !)

As far as I'm concerned, I expect the managers to anticipate these things.
If it was simple as just picking the players that deserve their place, I'm sure we could probably all do it !
