GRIMSBY Town have today made their fifth summer signing - with Nathan Arnold the latest addition.

The winger, who can also play up front, has finalised a season-long loan deal at Blundell Park.

The 26-year-old penned a two-year contract with Cambridge United last summer, featuring in more than 30 matches as the U's claimed promotion and won the FA Trophy.

Mariners fans will remember the quickwire attacker from his unsuccessful trial period with the club five years ago.

The former Mansfield man went on to enjoy a three-year spell with Alfreton before his switch to the Abbey Stadium.

Good news. Centre mid and 2 strikers to go.

Should have signed him way back when he was on trial instead of choosing Chris Thompson over him....yes...Who?
Always liked the look of him.

Good signing potentially.

Edit; Oh its a loan i see.

Got a 1 in 4 / 1 in 5 average according to Soccerbase so in line with some of our other strikers over the years  ;)

That's as a winger tho? Given the chance up front he might be able to add to that. Does anyone no if it's a season long loan with the view to a permanent move?

We had a certain Stuart Brace play for us in the late 1960's and early 70's and he was a winger but had a great scoring record. 1969-70 season 25 goals from 46 appearances, 1971-72 23 goals from 51 appearances and 1972-73 20 goals from 48 appearances. I don't care where the goals come from as long as we score them.

As I've said on the other thread, I wonder if there's the option of recall? Would be a blow to lose him halfway through the season if he's playing well.
Posted by: Tommy, July 19, 2014, 2:46pm; Reply: 17
When Cambridge played at BP (in the league) he played centrally, just off the striker.

If we played with one striker and Nielson, Arnold and Mackreth rotating in the 3 positions behind (with 2 of Disley/Brown/Paddy deeper) that would be interesting.

Another good signing from Hurst. I don't think we'll see another central midfielder as already have brown, mclaughlin and Disley. I can see another striker being our final signing.

A goal grabber would be great to sign next but this really looks the to be the paciest, skillful forward line that we've seen in a long time.

Season long loan with a view to permanent deal. Good option all round.
We should have signed him seasons ago, although at least we getting a more experienced and improved player now.

Wingers Covered

Would just like to see another Centre Midfielder and a couple of strikers now.

I don't get it.

"U's Director of Football, Jez George, said: "Nathan was made available on a free transfer at the end of the season, so whilst this isn't a permanent move, this arrangement suits all parties involved.  Grimsby have conducted themselves extremely professionally throughout the whole process, they are a good club and it's a good option for Nathan.  We thank Nathan for his contribution last season and wish him all the best."

Why not just sign him? On better wages at Cambridge than we can offer?

But we were a league club then. He is obviously not seen as a league standard player by Cambridge otherwise they wouldn't be releasing him or maybe I've missed something. Previously to Cambridge he was also playing at Conference Premier level so this could be his level - who knows? But at least we have him for a full season and will benefit from that season long stability.

Another good signing we have signed 5 players that fans at their club rated which is a good thing, he has dropped down to BSN level with Hyde after we chose Chris Jones over him. So he's perfect player to have going to places like Alfreton,Chester, Braintree etc. he's a good player to come on aswell for Mackreth speed with speed and can play in various positions like Magnay can which is a bonus.

Looking a very good squad.

I think Hurst has gone on record in previous season saying that he likes to have at least 5 strikers in his squad so he'll be very aware of our limited options upfront at this moment in time.

Absolutely spot on Les, we have so far signed quality players for this Level and yes I am sure we would have like the full squad on place for start of pre-season but it's not that simple. As far as I am concerned this Summer has so far signed players that will improve us, still want a couple more but I am sure they are plans a foot. Well done Town UTM

I think this another good signing, after a couple of frustrating weeks of inactivity we seemed to have highlighted some key players and got the ones we really want.  It is shaping up nicely but please oh please can we get a 20+ goal a season striker!! I know there have been lots of names thrown about but if we can get a striker as decent as these signings I will be very happy with our business.

Nathan Arnold has joined Grimsby on a season-long loan deal from Cambridge United.
Arnold was transfer-listed by United at the end of last term following their promotion to League Two.
The 26-year-old attacker looked as if he could still figure in Richard Money’s plans again this term after featuring in United’s first three pre-season friendlies.
He scored twice in Tuesday’s 8-0 thrashing of St Neots, but the Mariners have snapped up Arnold for their own bid to win promotion from the Conference Premier.

Seems like he hasn't missed out on any pre season training which is always good as he won't be lagging behind in terms of fitness, as well as this it looks like he's been producing good form this pre season! I'm looking forward to seeing him play in our next friendly

Not sure where you've got that from - barely played last few months of last season and was made available for a free transfer depite having a year left on his contract. Wasn't going to play for Cambridge this season.

Cracking signing for us though, gives us much needed pace and someone else used to this division.

A 40 goal striker will do. No need for 2, that's just greedy.

Both cook and hannah were better the more games they played

I've seen him play a fair few times and have to say he has always looked a danger, he has good pace and a trick in him, I think it's a really good attacking signing, can play a couple of positions too, we have some real pace and width now.

Do we actually have a pacey team though?

Asward
Nsiala - heard he has pace, not seen him much though.
Brown??
Mackreth
Arnold
Neilson?? I think he's more close ball control than direct pace.

We have lost a little pace in rodman and Colbeck which cancel out the two new wingers, so I'd say the new addition of pace we have is brown and Nsiala.

To be honest I couldn't give a toss what sort of gesture or message a signing shows. It's all about winning games and getting promoted. As long as we don't sign Lee Hughes or people or similar, I'll make decisions based on performances for Grimsby. Each to their own though eh :-)
Posted by: Tom13, July 20, 2014, 8:52pm; Reply: 76
What I would say (and this may be just conjecture) is that if he mainly featured in Cambridge's first half of the season but not much in the second half, wasn't the first half when Cambridge were top of the league and really impressive, and then they flopped in the second half of the season (when he wasn't involved)? This probably wasn't the only factor in Cambridge's flop in second half of the season (return of loan players etc), but judging from the stat I read that he was their second-best assister all season despite missing half the season, I'd say he's not too bad a signing to provide competition for Mackreth and Neilson.

So obviously you haven't seen him play.
Your basing your opinion on nothing and I'm basing my opinion on what I've seen.
The whole point of getting players in is to improve the team and in my opinion this bloke doesn't do this(based on what I've seen of him)
So no I don't do it for a bet.

Remember him looking decent for Mansfield against us way back when and looked alright for Alfy too. Much better than Colbeck.

Well I hope he settles in well sets up chances and scores a few goals. We will soon find out as he will play the first 3 games at least due to Neilson's suspension. Who knows, Scotty might not get straight back in which would mean Nathan is doing the business. Bring it on.

So obviously you haven't seen him play.
Your basing your opinion on nothing and I'm basing my opinion on what I've seen.

Sorry I didn't answer every one of your questions. Yes I have seen him play, for alfreton I thought he ws always dangerous but can't remember much about his performance for Mansfield and I didn't see him playing for Cambridge.

Just because I don't harp on about seeing every game he's ever played in doesn't mean I've not got an informed view as well as you.

"Obviously"?
