Wrexham have been given permission to speak to Gary Mills at Gateshead.

My guess is he will not have a bigger budget at Wrexham than he has had in the North East

As long as he does not say,

" My first signing will be Carl Magnay,he is out of contract at the end of the season."

ha, a very good reply. Pete, I mean Gary, you've got the job

Hope he doesn't go. Should things not go right in the next few weeks I'd make him my first choice for the next manager.

Think Gatehead might want rid anyway. Hardly been a success there.

I can't see that one as Magnay has said that he is p1ssed with Mills for releasing him at the end of last year............ Apparently Mills done not like players to have opinions.

"Do you think that terribly wrong sending off of Neilson and freak goalkeeping error had any bearing on you getting to Wembley last season?".

Wrexham have the upper hand on the P word though....Potential.

Also have the proverbial sleeping giant tag, big club, etc etc

Really? Finished in play offs last year. Close this year. Pound for pound he's surely outperformed most managers (inc our own).

I wouldn't consider them close this year and their budget's probably quite decent (at a guess!)

But yeah, I'd be surprised if they wanted rid after how well he did last season (and they lost their best player)

Wrexham have never been and never will be a bigger club than Grimsby , He should wait two weeks then come to a big club  ;)

I'd say Wrexham are of comparable size to us really - 'bigness' being a highly subjective concept. They've certainly got a bigger stadium.

As for Mills - the interesting aspect here being that either Mills, Gateshead or both are obviously a little unhappy with the current arrangement - hence giving Wrexham permission.

Mills has managed an attacking, attractive, moderate budget team to promotion from the conference, regardless of what people think of his most recent pedigree at Gateshead. I know a bit about his methods from people who know him.

Wouldn't want Mills here...simple as that.

It's an interesting one though. He clearly likes to be in charge and we all know Magnays opinions of Mills. His budget will be smaller but the club is bigger, suppose it depends what you want. A club who had a chance and blew it or one that did similar but is more likely tobdonit again with actual support from fans and a club with some tradition?

Tranmere?

Us if we don't go up?

I would imagine he has sights set higher than that. Bookies favourite for the Tranmere job so if they go down that would be probable.

Obviously it's all "if's" and "but's", but I think Mills could really achieve something here with our budget.

Yeah he obviously dropped a bollock with Magnay but every manager has probably got rid of someone who's proved them wrong at some point, even the best Managers.

He has a similar budget at Gateshead so I understand

What was his budget at York like? They lost half a million quid or so so I'm guessing it was decent, but still must've been less than Fleetwood and Luton (who they hilariously beat in the final with an offside by 15 yards winner!)?

I don't know how people find the exact budgets but I know in an Interview with Magnay a few weeks back he said that at the start of the season Gateshead were "hoping to win the title with their increased budget". They also paid Rodman more than we could afford. Not exactly a scientific approach to calculating their budget but I think it's fair to say they're not plucky minnows in this division.
Posted by: chaos33, April 25, 2015, 5:58pm; Reply: 24
And that's it is it? How scientific for what is basically a received idea. Maybe Gateshead paid Rodman more money than we wanted to pay him, rather than what we could afford.

The truth is, nobody on here knows how big the relative budgets are for sure, and budgets are fluid anyway. It's fairly well known that FGR are big payers, and Eastleigh are too. Beyond that, relative budgets are guesswork unless you are privy to an awful lot of very specific information.

The only halfway reliable bit of information (until a year and a half later when company accounts are published - and even they are opaque at times) are attendances. So bar obvious cases where clubs bring in players from a much higher level (a la Crawley) I'd assume Cheatshead have a modest budget and that we have probably the 3rd or maybe 2nd biggest budget.

Perhaps you're right and Gateshead are conference minnows and we only offered Rodman part time wages. I have no idea. I certainly make no claims of accurately estimating club budgets.
Posted by: chaos33, April 25, 2015, 6:18pm; Reply: 27
No need to be churlish about it. I didn't say Gateshead are Conference minnows, and neither did I say we offered Rodman part time wages. Just pointing out that just because they paid him more than we wanted to doesn't mean they have a bigger budget than us. I know you have confidently declared relative conference budgets before. Merely pointing out that many a budget opinion is confidently stated, with no real basis in facts. Having a top 6 budgets list is little more than guesswork and hearsay. I think all that can be confidently declared (and I know this from a player) is that FGR and Eastleigh pay high wages, and Gateshead are decent payers too. As are we.

Would that be when I claimed Alfreton and Telford have bigger budgets than us? I think that's the only thing I've posted about budgets. There was a clue there that I wasn't too serious and have no idea what the relative budgets are.

I offered a couple of pieces of (possibly meaningless) clues that suggest Gateshead have a competitive budget. I'm not sure why it wound you up so much.

It didn't wind me up, and you're backtracking. You suggested that Gateshead were able to pay Rodman more than we could afford to.
Sounds like we actually agree.

Haha, ok, I'll grant you that I was making the assumption that we offered Rodman something generally in line with other players, i.e. what our budget allows for. That assumption may not be valid and we may have offered less than we could actually afford. We definitely agree that guessing budgets is a very difficult thing to do.

The only facts that we do know for certain are that over the season we got 20 points more than Gateshead and finished 7 places higher. There was a post earlier in this thread (not by you) that suggested based on budgets, Mills has outperformed Hurst. I find that a very strange claim to make given what we've both said about the mystery of budgets.
Posted by: chaos33, April 25, 2015, 8:03pm; Reply: 31
Yes, fair point and clearly, Mills hasn't outperfromed Hurst. Who knows what the relative budgets are, and I agree it was a strange conclusion to draw.
I suspect that Gateshead will be disappointed with what Mills has delivered this season, which is something of a regression on last season, for what was probably a bigger financial investment. Mills was given permission to talk to Wrexham, and that tells its own story for me. I'd suspect he may well not be the Gateshead Manager next season.

It was me who said it, and given all we do know for certain about budgets (our relative attendance*) is that Gateshead if anything overachieved this year and especially last, but we haven't.  Until someone comes up with evidence that Mills had a bigger budget or even anything close to ours, I stand by that conclusion.

* and not forgetting that we overspend every year too.

Rodman left here to join a big Scottish club, stating that the only reason was to play in a better league. Once he left, there was a change in manager & he didn't want Rodman. Meanwhile we signed his replacement, Jack, so he was left without a club, & ended up at Gateshead.

To suggest that Gateshead paid him more than us to get him is totally wrong. He left to better himself, it didn't work, ended up at Gateshead.

I can't believe this has turned in to a Alex Rodman thread we offered him a new improved deal, he turned it down there is no suprise that his performances improved a lot after christmas when he probably heard from his agent of Hibs interest he was a one man team sometimes runs with his head down and woudn't pass, don't want players who don't want to wore the black and white shirt, he turned us down for me this league is better then the Scottish Football League anyway.

We was able to bring in Jack Mackreth and Nathan Arnold on shared wages, which helped us in the long run with signings of Christian Jolley and Jordan Chappell (on loan) granted i know Jolley has been dissapointment but i still believe with a proper pre season he could be a dangerous player he once was it was only couple of seasons a go he devastating against us.

Going back to Gary Mills what he did at York was terrific i didn't think all that much to Fyfield, Paddy, Kerr, Chambers Doig was okay Parslow decent versatile player for us jury still out on Scottie Brown faded a lot after christmas the first 10 or 12 games he was our best player.

For me this Gateshead team was weaker team this season just gone, then the one before Magnay, Marwood, Maddison, Oster, Chandler, Shaw, Lester for his experience all impressed, especially Magnay he played LB no surprise PH snapped him up.

But for me i most impressed with this season was Saint-Luce he was the difference against us and that Gateshead team we played last season was his team he picked in pre season the one before was what he inherited, he made them a worser team in my opinion.

Some fans suggesting Gary Mills if we don't go up is a bit harsh PH has got us to the Play Offs the last three seasons, we got off to a poor start which cost us you have to get wins in them early games.

Before the game my son texted me to say he was pants at Wimbledon. I know they're a division higher but he watches both Town and Wimbledon so knows the respective levels.
