Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Early Christmas for Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/12/2012

CHRISTMAS came early for supporters of Grimsby Town. The Mariners triumphed in the top of the table clash with Wrexham on Friday night in a match which saw Town topple another of their promotion rivals and ascend to the summit of the non-league pyramid.

The hero of the evening was on loan Bradford striker Ross Hannah, the darling of the Pontoon, in what could turn out to be his final game in a Town shirt. Hannah, along with fellow loanee Scott Neilson, returned to the side for the final game of their loan spells, hoping to leave Town with happy memories if it turns out they'll never return.

Town in the end shaded a game of few chances. It always looked likely the match would have one goal at most, and in the end it was decided by a late goal by Hannah after a terrific cross by Aswad Thomas, picking out the Bradford striker's run at the far post. Hannah slid the ball into the Pontoon net to send the ground into raptures,

Town had started brightly and had an early penalty shout when Disley tumbled in the penalty area. There probably wasn't enough contact for the kick to be given, which it wasn't.

Wrexham though gradually came into the game and dangerman Danny Wright just failed to keep his header under the bar. The first half ended with the visitors on top.

After the break Grimsby again took the initiative. Both sides were defensively strong though and chances were at a premium. Town however probably had more possession and therefore you could argue they were more likely to make the breakthrough. Thanks to Thomas's cross Grimsby were able to grab all three points and send Town fans home happy.

Next up is Lincoln away, an in-form team who haven't played this weekend so may be slightly fresher. Grimsby will of course be missing both Hannah and Neilson and will have to replace them with other members of their squad until the January transfer window offers another opportunity to strengthen the side.
