Cheltenham End Run

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/10/2015

GRIMSBY came back down to Earth after their 12-match unbeaten run came to an end on Friday night at Blundell Park. Cheltenham won thanks to a second half strike by Aaron Downes midway through the second half after Town had bossed the first period,

Paul Hurst stuck with the side that beat Harrogate in the FA Cup last week, which meant that Danny East continued on the right side of midfield and Arnold on the left.

Grimsby dominated the whole of the first half but without creating a huge number of chances. The turning point came on the half hour mark when Cheltenham appeared to have handled the ball inside the box but the referee awarded a free kick just outside the area from which Bogle struck the wall.

Cheltenham gradually came into the game during the second half and started to create chances with McKeown forced into a couple of saves. The visitors took the lead from a corner when the initial ball was not cleared by the Town defence and it bounced to the unmarked Downes who hooked it past McKeown into the net.

Town were unable to muster much in the remaining 20 minutes of the game, although Disley did go close with a valley which went just wide of the goal.

The result temporarily moved Cheltenham to the top of the table, although Forest Green overtook them following Saturday's game and Grimsby dropped out of the top five.

The Mariners have another weekend off from league actions when they entertain St Albans next weekend.
