Town Pay the Penalty

TOWN were thumped 4-1 at Mansfield in a one-sided game that showed the gulf between the two teams. The result leaves the Mariners close to the bottom of the table, with just two wins to their name. At this stage, a relegation battle looks far more likely than any assault on the upper echelons of the table.

Russell Slade named an unchanged team after the win over Crewe the previous week. Town started slowly and almost conceded from the kick-off and needed James McKeown to make a good low save to deny Angol with just seconds gone. With Town not seriously troubling Mansfield they needed McKeown again to keep them in the game, this time denying Hemmings. Only Dembele looked any threat for Town going forward but the young winger often lacks the end product.

The first goal can from the spot. Mills stuck out a leg to bring down Mirfin giving the referee an easy decision. Angol scored from the spot and gestured to the Town fans behind the goal, resulting in more than one arrest from the heavy police presence.

The first half ended 1-0, but it could have been far worst with the home side dominant.

Town started the better after the break but were undone by poor defending at a corner when the statuesque Grimsby defence allowed Pearce to head in from close range.

The third goal from another set piece. McKeown made a good save to deny Bennett but the Town defence were once asleep as Pearce once again nipped in to score from a narrow angle.

In the closing stages Angol grabbed a second penalty for the home side, before the ref felt sorry for Town and gave them a spot kick which Jones converted.

It was an emphatic victory and the season's heaviest defeat to date which can only signal danger signs. Town's next game is against Accrington who are belying their low support in second place and they have a 100% record at home which the Mariners will have to overcome if they are to not be sucked further down the table.
