Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Jones Pen Saves Town

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/09/2017

A LAST minute Sam Jones penalty rescued a point for Grimsby against Colchester last night at Blundell Park. Colchester had taken an early goal through Reid, only for Town to draw level almost straight away. Reid's second goal on the hour mark looked like being the winner, but the late pen salvaged an undeserved point.

Russell Slade made three changes from the side that lost at Newport on Saturday bringing in Scott Vernon, J J Hooper and Luke Summerfield with Jones, Matt and Mitch Rose making way.

After five minutes Colchester took the lead from play leading from a corner. McKeown made an initial save but the ball fell back to Reid and the Town 'keeper was unable to regain his balance to stop the second attempt.

Town equalised almost immediately though when a long ball through the middle saw Hooper control it and go on to score.

The remainder of the first half was scrappy but Dembele went agonisingly close when his shot struck the woodwork and rebounded straight to the 'keeper

Colchester continued to be the better side after the break and it was no surprise when dangerman Reid cut in from the left and curled his shot with the outside of his foot into the corner of the net for a stunning strike.

Jaiyesimiat, Matt and Sam Jones came on for Town as Slade threw everything he had at Colchester. It wasn't much though an overhead kick by Jones which was saved looked like Town's last chance. But an 89th foul on Jamille Matt gave Grimsby a lifeline from the spot which Jones made no mistake from.

Grimsby remain consistently inconsistent and look destined for another mid-table finish at best. However the chance to bring a smile to 5,000+ faces comes along very quickly as Grimsby's next game is against Lincoln at Blundell Park, one of the stand out fixtures of the season.
