18/02/2000 Rant

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/08/2000

friday 18th february

Lawrie McMenemy

This is something to being a close run thing with the second coming of Christ! Never in my memory did one man give so much to so many at Blundell Park and so much "in the town" his presence was an awesome thing, he was big, enthusiastic, warm. He got the huge crowds to Blundell Park with successful attacking football, and the knowledge that HE wanted you there. And when you talked to him "in the street" he had the time for you and spoke to you as though you "knew a bit about the game". His players got in contact with fans too, I well remember Dave Worthington (captain) being involved with an amateur club in the area (helping them with training etc.,) I have never since questioned the difference between the professional and amateur game, Dave's fitness was something else.

Another player in that era was Dave Boylen, again a great player and one who has continued with the "being involved in the game in this area." Dave was a "human dynamo" and with skill to match, I am told that his work with young players is second to none, would Lawrie want Dave in the team? There are others of course from those happy and successful times, who can forget Stuart Brace going either side of defenders and causing havoc, either with a shot, pass or cross?

Hey! This is not a Rant is it? Am I feeling alright? Am I happy with the boards new appointment? Will It be good for Grimsby Town?
