Question of the Week
What should happen to the EFL Trophy next season?
By: Rob Sedgwick
A report in tonight's Grimsby Evening Telegraph names Barnsley striker Bruce Dyer as the latest target for Lennie Lawrence. Lawrence, who admits an interest in Dyer, has spoken to Barnsley manager Dave Basset about a permanent move for the player, but so far he has not proceeded beyond that.
With the 25-year-old front man's contract due to run out at the end of the current season, Barnsley placed Dyer on the transfer list earlier this week in an attempt to stop him leaving next summer as a Bosman. His chances of starting for the Tykes have reduced substantially since the club's acquisition of Lee Jones and Sinisa Savic.
Dyer cost Barnsley £800K two years ago from Crystal Palace, more money than Lawrence has available. Today's opponents Gillingham made a £300K bid for Dyer on Thursday. Whether this bid has been accepted is not known, but as no announcement has been made by either club, one can assume not. With Gillingham having eight strikers on their books at Priestfield (as opposed to Town's four), Dyer may just prefer his chances with the Mariners, with first team football virtually guaranteed.
