Stadium Delay

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/09/2000

A special North East Lincolnshire Council meeting to discuss the findings of a consultant's report on alternative sites for Grimsby Town's new stadium has been postponed.

The report was commissioned by the council shortly after they infamously voted to refuse a change in the draft local plan. The change to the plan was the first step before proper consideration of the planning application for the proposed site at Great Coates could go ahead. The consultants, Graham Eve of Leeds, were reported to have looked at more than 15 sites in their search for a suitable location. The report was expected to be presented to the council on Wednesday, before the delay was announced today. The reasons for the delay were outlined by NELC deputy chief executive Ian Bolton who said: "I took this decision with the Mayor's permission. The reason is we asked the consultants to work within a short timescale." Mr Bolton stated that there were many questions which it needed to raise with the consultants. October 5 or October 12 have been put forward as possible dates for the meeting. This is another delay to the stadium project that the club could do without. The current season was originally intened to be the last at Blundell Park. Each week that goes buy makes this look more and more unlikely.
