Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish next season?

Reserve Match Abandoned

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/02/2001

Grimsby Town's reserve fixture against close rivals Scunthorpe was called off this evening after 80 minutes following an horrific injury to Scunthorpe winger Peter Morrison. The 20 year old had to be taken to hospital by ambulance following a tackle by a Grimsby player and the game was abandoned.

Scunthorpe reserve coach Russ Wilcox described the injury as as bad as the one suffered by David Busst of Coventry, when the Sky Blues defender suffered a double fracture of his leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and it is possible that Morrison's football career could be over.

Wilcox told Annova: "It was a sickening challenge and Peter went down really badly. He was in a very bad way and the ambulance had to come onto the pitch in order to take him to hospital as other staff at the ground couldn't move him.

"I don't want to get into who did what but it looked a very very bad break. It is sickening that something like this can happen in reserve team football. It is something that it not expected."

Morrison was taken to Scunthorpe General Hospital where the extent of his injury will be assessed and is expected to remain for some time in hospital while doctors monitor the former Bolton player's condition.

The Scunthorpe reserve coach added: "Everybody was sickened by what had happened and the game was abandoned because nobody really wanted to carry on"
