Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Buckley Speaks On Lincoln

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 01/03/2001

At a press conference to announce his appointment as manager of Lincoln City, ex Mariners boss Alan Buckley lost no time in stating his intention to change the Imps style of play but ruled out any intention of making changes in the coaching staff.

Declaring that his agreed tenure was too short to disrupt the coaching setup at Lincoln, Buckley effectively dismissed speculation that he might be looking at Grimsby's John Cockerill.

Launching straight into the playing style Buckley said "On occasions there have been managers going into clubs at the lower levels saying that it's not possible to get promotion by playing passing football,"

"My response to them is that if it's not possible to get promotion by playing passing football then how come my teams have got promotion five times?" "That's the way to go and that's the way we'll try and play. It doesn't happen overnight so it's important you get out there and work with the players. I'm looking forward to the challenge of bringing out the best of them".

"The most vital aspect for this football club is to make sure there's League football here next season. Then hopefully we can take it from there."

Buckley's appointment is of great interest to Grimsby fans who are witness to his tactics and strategies both on and off the field and no one will be very surprised to see him come knocking on the door of Blundell Park if he requires loan players.

The speculation has already begun with Mariner's fans trying to forecast which Grimsby players he will move for if he is given the green light by his Lincoln bosses.
