Grimsby Town FC Annual Awards Night

By: Nick Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

The Grimsby Town Awards night gives the fans and supporters a chance to talk to the players, the manager, board and staff members. Our roving reporter Nicko was at the function to present 3 trophies and talk to people. Nicko was able to ask a few questions and report on what was said.

Lennie Lawrence:

"It is early yet to talk too much about players I still have 6 of our current players I want to sign and then start from there but there will be more loan players next season than signings"

On Cornwall
"I would like to sign Cornwall but that depends on the price and what opportunities he has elsewhere"

Of Coyne "The last keeper I had in form like this was Stephen Pears at Middlesbrough 9 years ago. That year he got an England B call-up and was the best keeper in the country.

"Danny is very close to that. He is a very similar keeper and those are the best two I've had in 18 years as a manager, and I've had some good keepers. I've been very lucky with keepers."

"He's been a model of consistency and this award is fully deserved. I would say he's probably got us half a dozen points this year."

Of Jonathon Rowan "He's had a stop-start season but the potential remains as great as ever," "He's back training with us now for two or three weeks and, with a good pre-season, he could be anything."

"He's found a yard of pace and he needs to find another one still. He's had his injuries but they're just growing pains. He'll be a first team player, no doubt about that. He'll do it."

About other players: "There's a lot of good pros who have won bugger all tonight!"

"The secret has been in the team work and everybody's made a contribution, some big, some small, and no more so than you the fans,"

Talking from the stage Lawrence said "There is no reason I cannot do with Grimsby what I did with Charlton"
