Walsall's Wrack Placed on Transfer List

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/06/2001

FORMER Grimsby Town midfielder Darren Wrack was today placed on the transfer list by newly-promoted Walsall manager Ray Graydon. Cleethorpes-born Wrack joined the Saddlers from Blundell Park on a free transfer three weeks after Alan Buckley's arrival in his second spell at the club in 1998.

The 25-year-old featured in 33 games for the West Midlands outfit last campaign, but generally disappointed after an impressive first year (98-99) at the Bescot Stadium - a season in which the Saddlers gained promotion to the First Division in the second automatic promotion place. The 98-99 campaign proved to be Walsall's first of three successive changes of division in as many years during Wrack's spell at the unfashionable West Midlands club.

The attacking midfielder made just five starts and nine substitute appearances for the Mariners, all during the Brian Laws era, with just a solitary goal for Town to his name.

23-year-old defender Ian Roper was simultaneously placed on the transfer list today by Graydon, with the Walsall boss commenting: "It's important to move the team on and I don't think Darren or Ian did themselves justice last season. By their own standards they had a disappointing season and I feel this move is the right thing to do for both parties."

Grimsby boss Lennie Lawrence is unlikely to be tempted by the availability of Wrack after stating yesterday that he intended consolidating on contract talks with existing players - any moves for new squad members the Town manager proposes to put on hold until July when the first team squad report back for pre-season training.
