Bloomer to Sign? But Handyside Not For Baggies

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/06/2001

WEST BROM have killed rumours of Peter Handyside joining the Baggies when his contract with Grimsby Town expires this summer. Although he is free to leave Grimsby Town in July he will not be travelling to West Brom with CEO John Wile dismissing the speculation involving the Grimsby player.

"Obviously he's a player that we're aware of, but we've not been in touch with either him or his representatives," he told the Grimsby Telegraph, confirming that the rumours that the club had held preliminary talks with the player were false.

"As far as I know he has not spoken to the club unless he has bumped into Gary on a beach in Florida in the last few days."

It is understood that Megson has targeted Portsmouth captain Darren Moore in a £2-million deal.

Handyside has also been linked with moves to Dundee and Millwall and Lennie Lawrence has offered him a two-year deal but he is determined to wait until July before making his decision.

Hull City however are hoping to sign Grimsby youngster Matthew Bloomer who would be joining recent signings Andy Holt and David Lee.

Chairman Adam Pearson said: "He is a strong, young, pacy defender who can play across the back four and who has a keen desire to succeed at Hull City."

This will be a good move for Bloomer who will be joining a club with massive plans for the future with forecasts of substantial investments in the club.
