Scores Are Not Important Says Groves!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 22/07/2002

TALKING to the Grimsby Telegraph about the Scandinavian tour and the games Paul Groves emphasised that the results meant nothing but their place in the preparation for the upcoming season was vital.

"The game was a good exercise for us and that's the first outing in the first team shirt for the majority of them. That's their first outing for a long period of time and some of them didn't even play that many reserve games last year, like Stephen Downes."

"The aim of coming over here is to get some ideas into the lads' heads and it isn't going to happen over night. There's still work to be done and we played some good stuff in the second half. This game showed that we're getting there and we need to step it up another notch next time. I don't care if we lose 4-0 as long as there is an improvement on the performance again."

"Let me reiterate that the results are not important at this stage."

"The most important thing is that, on August 10, the personnel we have at our disposal are as fit as we can possibly get them. It's vitally important that everyone is given a fair share of games and if that means playing some of the young kids then that's what I have to do."
