Down But Not Out Review

By: Richard Lord
Date: 14/06/2003

"DOWN... But Not Out," Grimsby Town’s seasonal highlights video is now available to purchase on-line or from the club shop priced £17.99 and includes all the action from the 2002/3 campaign.

It may have been a disastrous year for GTFC but for those of you who want to relieve the brighter moments of the past season then the video is well worth buying.

As always, it includes commentary from John Moore and the team - plus most of the action away from Blundell Park too. The only exceptions to this were the F.A. Cup replay at Burnley and the 3-0 league defeat at Gillingham.

Apart from that, all the matches are covered - from the opening day defeat at Norwich, to the 2-2 draw against Brighton.

The production team are growing in confidence, as this latest effort appears more professional than ever. No annoying Mighty Mariner pop-ups, just action all the way.

The video begins with an intro sequence, showing some of the main highlights and providing a taster of what’s to come.

John Moore then introduces the video in good old-fashioned style (from the corner of a room as in the 95/96 season video) but the action soon starts with that terrible away day defeat at Norwich.

Whereas in the past there might not have been automatic replays of incidents, the growing number of professional outfits at other clubs means that every incident is shown once more in slow motion and discussed.

Don’t forget to look out for the controversial sendings off and penalty decisions, which last season, were aplenty.

The patient fans among you have to wait 37 minutes until the tape shows you the Mariners’ first win of the season at Brighton - and on the hour mark the epic 6-5 Burnley encounter arrives.

All in all, the video is packed with non-stop action. Unlike last season, when the last few months’ highlights were rattled through at quite a pace, this video maintains a steady speed.

Most matches include true highlights - like the near misses and brilliant saves - but some, as you can imagine, only show the goals (and those games tend to be ones Town lost).

At the end of the tape we are treat to interviews with Georges Santos and Paul Groves before the whole thing is wrapped up showing the goal of the season once more, scored by Darren Mansaram.

The tape runs for over two hours and during that time we are not dealt any shortage of the words ‘nasty’ and ‘surely’. The commentary is, as always, great. My favourite commentary piece comes during our 4-1 home defeat to Palace, where the word ‘pathetic’ is uttered many times.

It’s a well-put-together video and possibly the best effort yet, despite it being such a poor season on reflection.

Dig out £17.99 from somewhere, because, if you’re like me and buy the videos every season, this one won’t disappoint you.
