Question of the Week

Who will go down?

The New Manager

By: John Walter
Date: 15/02/2004

HAVING been a fan since a kid in '72 I've never known a management team so slow to react to things on the pitch as our last pair (Groves/Roger) and thank goodness they're gone.

Who next, lets take a look?

Buckley: out of date, boring, failed at every club except Town since his first spell with us. Look what he did to WBA (Hooray)!

Nigel Clough: Has done really well at Burton but why come to us when we may meet in the league in 18 months(or the Conference) and has no experience at league management.

Paul Wilkinson: Again no managerial experience, so possibly another Groves in the making (but what a great replacement for Rodger).

Steve Cotterill: As loyal a servant as Buckley. If we won 5 games on the trot he'd be away to the first club to offer him an extra tenner a week, or a higher status. (Unfortunate as he knows what he's doing on a shoestring budget).

Keith Alexander: Success on a shoestring in the conference. Fairly successful in the lower league with Lincoln working on what is probably an even tighter budget than at Town.

But knowing our board they will go for ultra cheap so experience/success may have no bearing only desperation of an out of work manager who will settle for any salary or conditions the club offer.

Whoever is appointed needs to bring some of the younger players into the first team NOW, because if we do go down we will need them and will have a team of reasonably experienced youngsters and decent older pros to help bring them on.

Now that to me sounds like a balanced capable team!

  • In a poll of the Fishy's readers Steve Cotterill emerged as a narrow favourite amongst Grimsby supporters as their choice of new manager. Nigel Clough came second, and Keith Alexander third.
