Beat the Bookies: Week 40

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/05/2006

LAST week was a good week for Beat the Bookies with Torquay's win at Carlisle and Rushden's relegation. With Carlisle's league title all but in the bag it ensures a profitable return for the season!

Grimsby need to beat Northampton at home to maximise their chances of automatic promotion. The bookies favour Grimsby with to win. bet365.com are offering 4/5 for a Town win, 11/4 for a Northampton win and 5/2 for a draw. If the match meant anything for Northampton I'd grab 11/4 for an away win with both hands for a team that has picked up 16 points from 18 and won their last three away games. Even as it stands it still looks a good price considering Grimsby's injury crisis going into the final game. The Cobblers are bound to be up for it with a full away end as well.

Moving on to the Oxford game. The bookies think this will be closer than the match at Blundell Park, with bet365.com making Leyton Orient only slight favourites at 6/5. Oxford are 13/8. Oxford were poor the other week when I saw them lose at home to Northampton, but I don't think Orient are as defensively strong as the Cobblers and Oxford, who have some good players in their squad, might have more of a chance. I can see the game ending in a draw, giving Grimsby a lifeline.

Interestingly Town's overall chances of getting automatic promotion work out at about 1 in 3.

Elsewhere in League Two Lincoln look certain to beat Rochdale at home (4/6). Carlisle are also an attractively priced 2/1 to win at Stockport with bet365.com.

RECOMMENDED BET OF THE WEEK:
Northampton to beat Grimsby (11/4)
