Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

The Opposing View!

By: The Fishy Team
Date: 11/05/2006

WITH our first playoff date looming, we thought we would find out what the other team fans are thinking about the playoffs and how they see their chances.

We asked Johnno at the Rivals Imps site what he thought.

Fishy: "What do you make of your chances Johnno?"

Johnno: "I have to say that we will win promotion from the Final. You have to believe and never stop believing. Realistically, this year will be harder than last season's play-offs because there are four teams who are more consistent and skilled than perhaps last season's qualifiers."

"Last season was a huge opportunity for us but we messed it up. We have to use that experience this season to ensure that it is fourth time lucky."

Fishy: "Who do you fancy for the final?"

Johnno: "Again, it has to be Lincoln City in the Final. Subconsciously, I feel that John Ward will be a prominent media focus in the final. Cheltenham should beat Wycombe, in which case, Ward will face one of his former clubs."

Fishy: "Who to look out for in your squad?"

Johnno: "We have a couple of unsung heroes but I am not going to help Russell Slade by highlighting them. Watch out for Simon Yeo's return from injury. He has not started a match since mid-March, so he is hungry for first team action and goals. Grimsby beware!"

Fishy: "Your predictions?"

Johnno: "Lincoln 2 -0 Grimsby and and Grimsby 1-0 Lincoln. To give Lincoln a 2-1 win on aggregate."

Next we asked Paul Dixon on the Cheltenham Rivals site for his views

Fishy: "What do you make of your chances Paul?"

Paul: "I think we have as much chance as the other three and we must be able to take heart after the 5-0 demolition of Mansfield on their own patch. That's got to give the players a massive boost."

"I just hope the players don't get over confident."

Fishy: "Who do you fancy for the final?"

Paul: "Can't see Grimsby slipping up again and they need to get revenge over Lincoln for the 5-0 walloping they got, what better way to do it than knocking them out of the play offs? Besides, I think a fair few Lincoln fans have an attitude problem."

"And of course, I think we can beat Wycombe."

Fishy: "Who to look out for in your squad?"

"The squad are gelling together nicely just at the right time and those that we will be looking at to get the goals are finding the net. But it's great to have Steve Gillespie back, he's quick, thinks well and has an eye for a goal, I'd put money on him being involved in a match winning goal."

Fishy: "Your predictions?"

"I think that the final will be between Grimsby and Cheltenham. As to what happens in the final, God only knows. It could go either way on the day but lets hope its won fairly and without a stupid decision from the officials spoiling the day."

"And no penalty shoot out!!"

That's the opposition but we could not let it go by without looking at the view from the Grimsby side so we asked Grim Rob for his views.

Fishy: "What do you make of our chances.

Grim Rob: "I think it will be pretty tight. We have the advantage of playing the second game at Blundell Park, which probably gives us a marginal advantage. We need to give ourselves a chance in the first game, obviously losing 5-0 again wouldn't be too smart!"

"A lot from our point of view depends on the fitness of key players, especially Michael Reddy. He's not been fit for a few weeks now and Reddy's pace was an enormous asset earlier in the season, especially away from home. It's no coincidence that our away form has dipped in the last few games."

"Our central defence will no doubt be sorely tested by your aerial threat, and we need Rob Jones especially to be 100% fit. I'm not sure about our full backs' fitness either, which is a worry."

"I imagine our game plan at Sincil Bank will be to keep it tight, not concede and try and use Reddy's pace on the break."

Fishy: "Who do you fancy for the final?"

Grim Rob: "Grimsby and Wycombe. They are a class act and will surely get their act together now they are in the last chance saloon."

Fishy: "Who to look out for in our squad?"

Grim Rob: "Mildenhall. A very good keeper. Rob Jones. One of the best central defenders in this league, and has had a super season. Bolland. Never stops fighting and gives 100% for every ball in the centre of the park. Reddy. A lethal striker and finisher who can rip the opposition apart given space and time, only let down by frequent injuries."

Fishy: "Your predictions for the games?"

Grim Rob: "A 1-1 draw at Lincoln, and a 1-0 win for Grimsby at Blundell Park!"
