Managerial Shortlist

WITH Graham Rodger dismissed just five months into his reign at Blundell Park, all attention will now turn to the question of his successor. Here, we look at some of the main contenders for the Mariners hotseat.

Neale Cooper

Enjoyed a tremendous time at Hartlepool, guiding the Pools to the League One play off final in 2005, only to lose to Sheffield Wednesday. Left to join Gillingham last season, which was to last only a few months into the season. Previous to his spell in England, he led Ross County to two successive promotions from Division Three to Division One.

Brian Little

John Fenty may be tempted to opt for experience and few have more than Brian Little. Little departed Tranmere Rovers at the end of last season after spells at Leicester, Aston Villa and Hull City.

Brian Horton

Another experienced manager, Horton recently left bottom of the table Macclesfield Town. Before this season, he had done a tremendous job with limited resources and may be looking for a quick return to the game.

Stuart Watkiss

Could perhaps persuade Fenty to make him full time manager with a decent result at the weekend. Watkiss did get Mansfield out of this league when he was their manager and has managed to secure some victories for the reserve side this season. However, he was manager when Kidderminster were relegated from the football league.

Dave Hodgson

Recently dumped by Darlington, Hodgson is no stranger to this league. One of Darlington's most successful managers of recent years. However, continuing legal wranglings with the Quakers could prove a problem.

Alan Buckley

Can there ever be a Grimsby Town managerial race without this man being mentioned?

Andy King

Former Mariners assistant boss under Kenny Swain. King enjoyed relative success with Swindon in League One until last season, when he left the County Ground.

Mark McGhee

Vastly experienced league manager with Leicester, Millwall and Brighton. Never managed in the bottom tier of English football and may have to be persuaded to relocate from down south.

Stan Ternant

Been out of the game since leaving Gillingham in 2005. Ternant very nearly kept the Gills in the Championship and came within a few points of leading Burnley into the Championship play offs just a few years previous to that.

Paul Sturrock

Might be a bit of a long shot given he was managing in the Premiership just a few seasons ago. The Scotsman has been linked with the Swindon Town job in recent weeks. Sturrock is a more than capable manager, having led Sheffield Wednesday to the Championship and Plymouth to two successive promotions.

Paul Wilkinson

There was continued speculation in the summer that Wilkinson would be returning to Blundell Park, before Rodger was appointed. Has built up an excellent reputation as reserve team coach at Cardiff. But with Town in such a perilous position at the foot of the football league, appointing Wilkinson would represent a huge gamble.

Chris Wilder

Come close to gaining promotion with Halifax for a few seasons and may fancy a job in the football league.
