Match Report: vs Mansfield

By: Jake Olley
Date: 15/12/2007

THE Mariners made it two wins in two this afternoon after defeating bottom of the table Mansfield Town 1-0 at Blundell Park.

Following last week’s 1-0 away win at Brentford Town boss Alan Buckley recalled Tom Newey to the side who stepped in for the injured Nick Fenton – with Justin Whittle only fit enough for a place on the bench.

Town started the brighter and could have taken the lead early on when midfield man Paul Bolland capitalised on a Mansfield defensive lapse only to see his rasping drive graze the post.

Danny North also had a couple of half chances as Mansfield did their utmost to maintain possession in hope of taking a point away from Blundell Park.

However, it was the Stags who nearly took the lead midway through the second half when ex-Mariner Michael Boulding was put through only to see his lobbed effort cleared off the line by young Ryan Bennett.

Eventually as the Mariners began to dominate Gary Jones gave Town the win after heading home a good ball from Nick Hegarty at the front post.

The win sees Town move five points clear of the relegation zone as they travel to Edgeley Park next week to take on Stockport County.
