Where will Grimsby be next season?

January Player of the Month

IN December there were signs that things were beginning to improve. But who could have predicted the amazing turnaround in January? Grimsby made the transition from relegation fodder to mid-table mediocrity and potential Wembley finalists in the space of a few short weeks. Now to decide who should take the credit!

The six players nominated by our readers for the January Player of the Month award, votes from which will count towards the eventual winner at the end of the season, are as follows:

Rob Atkinson - Been a rock in Town's back three and a big reason why we've stopped leaking goals. It is a major coup to land the Barnsley defender until the end of the season.

Jamie Clarke - Clarke was brought to the club as a right back who could also play in midfield. Until recently his chances have been limited, but a decent run in midfield as shown both the defensive and attacking side to his game. Jamie managed two goals during the month.

Nick Hegarty - Unbelievably Nick is the longest serving player at Blundell Park, but he has been overlooked by a string of managers. Only now are we finding out the better attributes of the left-footer. His crossing has always been his strength but recently he has shown a defensive side to his game as well.

Phil Barnes - Barnes has been transformed from a perennial scapegoat and target of the boo boys last season to a regular matchwinner from Town. His performances in January, when in truth Grimsby have not played well in many games, have been instrumental in helping Town grind out win after win throughout the month.

Danny North - Northy is Town through and through and gradually improving all the time. His finishing during January is starting make people take notice of the 20-year-old and he is a bright prospect for the future if he can stay on track.

Tom Newey - Probably one of the first name's on the team sheet every week. When the defence was playing badly Newey was usually the one exception and now with better players around him and a system which suits the Mariners, Newey has come into his own. His delivery from set pieces also provides its fair share of assists from the former Cambridge defender.
