Robbie Stockdale
Robbie Stockdale

Town Sign Stockdale

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 16/06/2008

SCOTTISH international defender Robbie Stockdale has joined the Mariners from Tranmere on a 2 year contract. The 28-year-old, who can play either at right back or at centre back, made 50 appearances in the Premiership for Middlesbrough.

Since leaving the Riverside Stockdale has played for Rotherham, Hull City and Tranmere, all in higher divisions than League Two.

The versatile six footer began his career as a striker in the Middlesbrough youth team but switched to a defensive position initially to break into the first team, and managed to win six caps playing at right back for Scotland whilst at the Riverside. He's remained as a defender ever since.

Stockdale signed for Hull in 2005-2006 but failed to make a single appearance and was released on a free transfer at the end of the season. He has made 80 appearances for Tranmere in the intervening two seasons, however.

Grim Rob says: Thank God we have got someone, especially as Stockdale sounds of the calibre to strengthen Town's squad from what we had last year. Assuming he's going to play right back we still need a couple of central defenders however. Hopefully Stockdale's signing will convince prospective defensive signings that Town can challenge for a promotion place next season.
