Grimsby v Shrewsbury Preview

By: Marc Reed
Date: 05/03/2010

THIS Saturday promotion chasing Shrewsbury visit Blundell Park for what we all hope will be three points for The Mariners and finally ending their appalling 25 game run without a win.

Who are they?

Their History

Shrewsbury Town who are currently lead by Paul Simpson, were formed in May 1886. The club was promoted back to the Football League in 2004 at the first attempt, when they won the Conference play-off final. They had been relegated into the conference national from what was then the Third Division (fourth tier) in 2003. In 2007, Shrewsbury left their Gay Meadow ground which was their home for the previous 97 years to the newly built Prostar Stadium.

Last Season.

Last season was a good season for The Shrews in comparison to our own. With a 7th placed finish, they eventually made it to the play-off final, which they were beaten by Gillingham 1-0, with the goal coming from Simeon Jackson on 50 minutes.

This Season.

This season the club are currently on course to achieve the same. Being 6th in the table, they are in the play-off places once again. Scoring more goal than they have conceded they have a plus 10 goal difference as opposed to our minus 24. On loan Town winger Jamie Devitt spent a brief period on loan at Shrewsbury earlier on in this league campaign.

Biggest Hero Is…

According to the 2004 BBC Cult Heroes poll, their biggest hero is Dean Spink, who played for the club from 1990-1997 and also a brief spell in 1999.

Most Famous Player to Wear the Shirt.

The most famous players to represent the club include Neville Southall, Mickey Thomas, David Moyes and in more recent times England goalkeeping contender Joe Hart

Key Player...

Key player for Shrewsbury has to be their leading goal scorer Dave Hibbert, who has scored 13 league goals already this season. Other players to look out for is solid centre half Graham Coughlan, who has previously turned out for the likes of Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday. Another player I personally rate is Australian born Shane Cansdell-Sheriff who has impressed me every time I have seen him play.

    The Fishy Prediction

I never bet against The Mariners and never presume they will lose, bearing that in mind I will have to say a 1-1 draw.
