Football Needs a Shake-Up

By: Steve Johnson
Date: 16/06/2010

ALTHOUGH I will not probably not boycott all the world cup games I totally agree with the sentiment of Rob Sedgwick's article.

I was prepared to be won over by the World Cup spectacle but after games memorable by their lack of passion and inventiveness together with the continuous and irritating drone of the vuvuzelas I am rapidly losing interest. Teams seem full of fear, commentators and studio guests full of platitudes and hot air. Only the South American national anthems, particularly Uruguay, are worth listening to.

As to England, once more they flatter to deceive and hide behind Green's error hoping it would mask a very average performance. Any squad with Wright Phillips, never mind playing him, is doomed to fail. Capello chose to take injury-prone players (King), out of form players (Carrick), players not playing for their clubs (Heskey, Wright-Phillips) and continues with the Lampard-Gerrard non-axis. Too late for Martin O'Neill or Neil Woods so let's lose to Germany, no need for penalties on their first performance, and come home .

Leave it to countries whose players perform for both club and country and are not grossly overpaid.

Football in this country needs a thorough shake up from Premier league arrogance to all clubs who operate their finances in a very non-transparent way e.g. Notts County

An early exit may be the wake up call our football leagues need

P.S. England to beat Argentina 3-2 in the final with Wright -Phillips scoring in the last minute
