Town Sign Congolese

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/01/2011

GRIMSBY took an unusual approach to annulling the threat of tonight's opponents Kettering before the game - they signed their best player, striker Serge Makofo. The Congolese attacker, who can also play on the wing, has signed a 3.5 year deal with the Mariners.

The 24-year-old originally signed for MK Dons, but left at the age of 20, and has since played for Maidenhead, Grays and Kettering.

He has recently been playing for Kettering on the left wing (where I recently saw him play). Makofo, is lightening quick, and good at running at players and taking on them on. Like many African players, he is unpredictable, and can change a game with one moment of brilliance.

Signing Makofo clearly worked as the Mariners beat Kettering 2-1. The fact that Lee Peacock was sent off means Makofo will probably be needed straight away to partner Alan Connell against Crawley, a team against whom he was very effective on Saturday.

Poor old Kettering have had their team fleeced of its best players. Crawley recently snapped up, winger James Dance and defender John Dempster, and now the Mariners have signed their Congolese winger.
