Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Fixture Pile Up!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/02/2013

GRIMSBY'S fixture list is reaching congestion point for the remainder of the season. The Mariners aren't the worst-affected team in the country (quite a few sides are worse off). However their participation in two competitions is costing Town dearly in terms of slots for games.

The FA Trophy semis are both to take place on a Saturday, and the final if Town reach it will also take place at the weekend, which will cause the postponement of the Forest Green game. The Mariners already have a fixture yet to rearrange against Ebbsfleet. There's a free Tuesday in Town's schedule in March (5th) but Ebbsfleet have a game on that night.

It looks likely that Grimsby will have to play at least two Thursday games if they manage to beat Dartford, and you wouldn't like to bet on there not being any more postponements due the weather. Town have still got to play at Gateshead and Woking who have had a lot of postponements at their own grounds due to poor drainage.

Town can't afford not to take their games with Dartford seriously, with the financial rewards and the chance of a day out for the club at Wembley at stake. However the extra game it would put in their schedule is a problem the Mariners could do without.

One thing Town can count on is this weekend's FA Trophy game with Dartford going ahead - the forecast for the weekend for the Grimsby area is warm and without rain.

Fortunately for Grimsby their main promotion rivals Wrexham (according to the bookies) have the same problem as Town do about the FA Trophy. But other teams could benefit by getting their games out of the way and picking up points before Town's mad scramble to play their remaining games in March and April.
