Gloom Ends at Gateshead

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/08/2013

GRIMSBY came from behind to record their first win of the season at Gateshead at go some way to banish the memories of Aldershot following a much improved display on Tyneside.

Chris Doig came in for Clayton McDonald in defence, and Lennel John-Lewis replaced Scott Neilson in the front 3.

After a slow start Turnbull put the home side in front on 20 with a powerful strike.

The lead only lasted five minutes though as Hearn nodded in from close range after a terrific cross by Colbeck.

John-Lewis went off injured and Town were down to 10 men for the last 10 minutes of the first half, during which time the floodlights went off in the fading light but play went on in the gloom.

10-men Town made it to half time, and the lights came back on.

The lights failed at the start of the second half, which put the game in doubt, but the game eventually restarted.

Town went in front from a short corner which was played to McLaughlin who crossed for Doig to stoop in.

Several of the pre-season favourites dropped points, meaning only one club Southport have six points from two games. Forest Green drew at Nuneaton thanks to a late Hodgkiss equaliser, Kidderminster lost at Alfreton and Wrexham were defeated at Halifax. Suddenly Grimsby's league position doesn't look so bad now they are one of eight clubs on four points.

Grimsby weren't unduly troubled as they saw out the game.
