Eight Players Depart

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/05/2014

PAUL Hurst has released eight first team players today, including striker Andy Cook and experienced midfielder Scott Kerr. Also departing are defenders Clayton McDonald, Jamal Fyfield and Sam Hatton, winger Joe Colbeck, striker Dayle Southwell and 'keeper Jonathan Hedge.

Four players are out of contract but have been offered new deals. They are 'keeper James McKeown and midfielders Andi Thanoj, Alex Rodman and Craig Disley.

Paul Bignot, Aswad Thomas and Lenell John-Lewis been retained in an option on their contracts.

Three youth team players, all defenders, have been given professional contracts. Caine Winfarrah, Paul Walker and Ellis Humble will all be pushing for a first team place next season as full time professionals.

Hurst is yet to speak with Scott Neilson or Chris Doig about their future at Blundell Park, but the fact that they have not been released suggests that they may be given the chance to stay.

Probably the most controversial departure is striker Andy Cook who was never given a regular first team place, and struggled for form and fitness for parts of the season.. Scott Kerr, along was Disley, was almost always a first choice under Paul Hurst, and it's a surprise to see him released after just one year at the club.

In one other departure, longstanding goalkeeping coach Steve Croudson is leaving Grimsby for a new position at a Premier League club.
