GATESHEAD beat Grimsby 3-2 in the FA Trophy after Town twice came from a goal down to level the match. But a header by Gateshead substitute Shaw in the second period of extra time proved one too many goals to come back from.
McLaughlin and a Mackreth were Town's scorers, with the latter scoring late in the game to force extra time. The biggest worry for Town is a facial injury to top scorer John-Lewis, which resulted in Grimsby playing the whole of extra time with ten men.
Grimsby now play Nuneaton away on Saturday while Gateshead head to Wrexham in the league.
