One In One Out

News From 11th January 2000

Town striker Jack Lester has been transfer listed after turning down the board's second offer (the new board's first).

Revealing the reasons behind the decision, Town manager Alan Buckley stated that it was a "business decision".

Lester under the lamentable terms of the Bosman ruling, will be able to leave GTFC for nothing when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Lester, however, says he is not ruling out staying with the Mariners.

"Whereas the last one was a good offer, it's one I can turn down.
"I've no quarrels about staying and I know that I don't have to prove myself at Grimsby, whereas if I went somewhere else I would have to.
"I'm not ruling out signing for them again.
"I'm 24 now and I've been in the game six years and I've got nothing to show for it.
"I've probably got six years left at this level in the game and it's not that long a career and I have to look after myself.
"I have to start thinking about what I'll do when I stop playing football.

In the meantime trialist Simon Weaver (currently on trial from ex-Mariner Keith Alexander's Ilkeston Town) looks set to be offered a contract by the Mariners.

He hurt his ankle during a close-season trial at Blundell Park towards the end of last season side and has not played for Ilkeston since.

Weaver, who returned to Grimsby after his injury, and has impressed in three recent reserve matches for Grimsby, will hopefully be on the Town books soon.

Weaver is one of two trialists from Ilkeston, the other being former Notts County striker Mark Quayle.
