Smudger Injury Blow

News From 14th January 2000

It has been revealed that Town central defender Richard Smith requires an operation on a back injury which could put him out of action for up to six months, causing him to miss the rest of the season.

In yet another injury setback for the Mariners, Smith is waiting for an operation to fuse together two vertebrae which have become dislodged in his spine.

Injury-prone Smith has had problems with his back throughout his career, the latest episode having started in the 5-2 home defeat against Charlton (in which he was stretchered off).
Since then he has tried to let the injury heal, but has recently been advised by a specialist that he requires the operation.

Grimsby are already are without fellow defender Peter Handyside who is still recovering from an ankle surgery sustained in pre-season, and are generally very short of options in the back four at the present moment.

The news has come on the eve of Grimsby's crunch clash with Nottingham Forest at Blundell Park tomorrow, and poses yet more selection problem for under-pressure Town boss Alan Buckley.
