Question of the Week

Who will go down?

22/08 Carlisle

By: Richard Dawson
Date: 22/08/2000

Two first half goals inside two minutes by Stacey Coldicott and Bradley Allen saw Grimsby triumph 2-0 in the Worthy Cup 1st round 1st leg fixture. Coldicott's neat chip following a defensive melee opened the scoring for Town in front of just over 1900 spectators.

Town started off the 1st half brightly and looked a division better (but not really two) than their 3rd division opponents. Town tried lots of shots in the 1st half (yes, from outside the box reviving a lost tradition)

The first goal came from a defensive melee, Carlisle panicked the ball out but only as far as Stacy who looked up and chipped the ball. It was a very neat goal.

The second goal came just a minute later. Following good work down the Town right, a cross was taken down by Bradley Allen, who turned delightfully and scored with a well placed shot.

In the second half Carlisle changed their tactics and closed us down more quickly which made it more difficult for us but we still managed to get quite a few efforts goalwards although all were either blocked or off target.

The team were applauded off the pitch to which the players responded with high claps to all the stands.

Overall it was a semi-competent performance. The first 20 minutes in particular where Town played to their touchline-hugging wingers and tried a few shots was a really refreshing change.
