Danish Striker To Sign

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/10/2000

Lennie Lawrence announced today that he is signing Danish striker David Nielsen from FC Copenhagen on a three month loan with a view to a permanent transfer. If the registration comes through in time, Nielson will play in the team against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

Lawrence has been after Nielson for a while and his capture of his man is a great relief for him. Roy Hodgson, FC Copenhagen's manager, says Nielson is one of his top scorers and does not want to lose him, but the player has set his sights on playing in England and Hodgson has had to reluctantly let him go.

Jostein Jensen, The Electronic Fiscake's resident expert on Scandinavian football, gives us his view on Nielsen, who he says played for German team Fortuna Düsseldorf prior to joining FC Copenhagen, and has proved valuable to the Danish club.

Jostein adds that as Nielsen is just 23 and not quite a polished diamond yet, he had the potential to be one of the best strikers of the Danish league within a few years. He is best known among the fans for his charisma, e.g. he always celebrates his goals in a new and artistic manner!

Nielson finished the 8th top scorer in Denmark with 15 goals last season, and has scored once in seven appearances this campaign, of which four were as a substitute. Nielson has also played for Danish clubs Lyngby, OB, and Frederikshavn. He was born on 01/12/1976, is 1.83 m (6'0") in height, and weighs 75 kg (11st 11lb).

Lennie Lawrence meanwhile continues his search for another striker and Clive Mendonca is in the frame. Lawrence will personally watch Mendonca play on Monday night in Charlton's reserve game at Leicester and assess the striker's overall fitness level.
