Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Imp-ressed by Finnigan

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 11/01/2001

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Mariners may be about to launch a bid for Lincoln City skipper John Finnigan. It is understood that Grimsby have been monitoring the situation with regard to Finnigan since the end of last season.

According to an unofficial Lincoln City website, the highly-rated midfielder was watched by Town boss Lennie Lawrence and Chief Scout Steve Thompson on Tuesday night as the Imps took on Blackpool in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Finnigan, 24, is widely held to be one of the most competitive midfielders in the lower leagues and is fully expected to leave Sincil Bank when his present contract expires in the summer.

Wakefield-born Finnigan signed for Lincoln in 1998 after failing to make an impression at Nottingham Forest, and upon the appointment of Phil Stant as manager, was immediately handed the captain's armband.

With Lawrence currently denying any interest, no firm offers for the Lincoln anchor-man have been received as yet.

It is, however, believed that a number of clubs are keeping tabs on Finnigan as his contract runs out, with Grimsby now emerging as a leading contender to capture his signature at the end of the season.
