Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Donno: I Want to Stay

By: Richard Lord
Date: 22/01/2001

Grimsby midfielder-turned goal scorer Kevin Donovan, who has recently scored 4 goals in 12 starts, said he would like to continue playing his football at Blundell Park as Lennie Lawrence sorts out contract talks with the players.

Donovan, who scored a 92nd minute equaliser at Stockport this weekend said, in regards to contract talks "I have spoken to the manager, he knows my position and negotiations are ongoing at the moment,"

Talking to The Grimsby Evening Telegraph, the Yorkshireman continued, "if things are right from his point of view and my point of view, things will be sorted out, but contract negotiations are never quick things, it is just a matter of time and we will see how it goes."

Manager Lawrence accepts the fact that he might be resigned to losing the ex-Baggie at the end of the season as he became free to talk to any club from January 1st. "No doubt there will be other clubs that can afford to pay him more than we can, but I do hope he stays here because I think he is a fundamental part of the team."

Donovan, who has been virtually ever-present since the beginning of Lawrence's reign, is aware of the manager's opinion of him. "We have spoken about it (the contract) and I have no doubt he could earn more money elsewhere, but he knows what I think of him" commented Lawrence. The 29-year old only needs six more appearances for the Mariners to beat the number of times he's appeared for West Brom. "I love playing my football here, the gaffer knows it and everybody knows it, we'll just have to wait and see" added Donovan.
