Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Robins: Clare "In Reach"

By: Electric Robin
Date: 02/02/2001

Chairman Paul Baker is insisting that Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill will be given the cash needed to buy on-loan striker Daryl Care from Grimsby Town. The only remaining obstacle would appear to be the wages expected by the former Republic of Ireland under-21 international.

The Thursday 1 February edition of the Gloucestershire Echo has revealed that Baker is backing Cotterill's attempts to keep 22 year-old striker Clare at Whaddon Road. While not revealing the fee demanded by Grimsby, the chairman insists that it is within Cheltenham's reach and that the only stumbling block could be the player's wages.

The deal now appears to rest on the ability of Baker and Cotterill to negotiate a deal with Clare's agent. It is possible that the player may have to take a wage cut if he is to stay at Whaddon Road.

It is well known that the Robins are not one of the big payers in the Third Division and that Cotterill is operating on a tight budget. This situation is unlikely to change until Cheltenham have financed the new Wymans Road stand.

Reports last week indicated that Lennie Lawrence had turned down a £40,000 bid from Cheltenham. However, these reports have since been denied by both Cotterill and Baker.
