"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

sunday 4th february

Letter from the Manchester Evening News

"Joe Royle should do himself a big favour and stop making references as to who City were playing this time two seasons ago. Like every other City supporter I am delighted City are this season playing the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and United rather than the likes of Grimsby, Crewe and Tranmere."

Spotted by Ed Blackbourn who adds, "It made much better reading than the Report on Town vs. Stockport game.... when all it said about the second half was 'The second half was all Grimsby, as Kilner acknowledged, but they never looked as though they were going to equalise until the injury-time horror'

Grim at Grimsby

From The Sun

"GRIM AT GRIMSBY" tells of two Lincoln teenagers stranded at Grimsby Town station after missing their train back to Lincoln, then forced to stay overnight in Town, as the subsequent two later trains were cancelled.

Three drunks reputed just released from jail pestered the girls and made lewd suggestions with a bottle of cider. One of the girls' mums said "God knows what would have happened if they'd fallen prey to the drunks. It's a warning to all parents."

Under a picture of a deserted Town station, the Sun commented "Grim at Grimsby ... girls sat for hours at freezing, unmanned station". Well there was a reserve match on at BP, what would you expect?.....

Cod/Haddock debate

From London Evening Standard

"It can't be easy, though, to forget about trips to Chelsea [in the FA Cup] and focus instead on Cleethorpes when the wind is whipping in off the North Sea and the cod are landing in the goalmouth."

Their overall verdict is that the Dons are worth a Draw! We'll see, but once again these southern softies think that the only fish is cod, and not the famous haddock!

Coventry History

From the Coventry Rivals Site

The next two seasons, Coventry finished below the likes of Grimsby, Newport and Torquay. The board knew that a City the size of Coventry should not have a team struggling against small clubs from fishing ports.'

Cod and chips all round, lads

From the Guardian

Columnist Martin Kelner, musing about the media treatment of little Walsall (playing West Ham) who were dubbed the ugliest place in Europe by an architecture critic :-

"...Grimsby and Morecombe no doubt breathed a sigh of relief when Walsall was chosen to head the list of Europe's premier blots, but they were not immune from being patronised by Match of the Day. "Cod and chips all round, lads," said the summariser when Grimsby scored..."

Ivano Bonetti on playing in the UK

From the Sunday Telegraph

During their conversations Marr suggested Bonetti himself might fancy treading the turf at Dens Park; the Bonettis were working at Italy's version of Conference level. "I told him I was sorry," said Ivano, "but I had no interest in coming just as a player because I'd had bad experiences with managers at Grimsby [he put it mildly: he was the victim of a serious physical attack by Brian Laws] and Tranmere [where he fell out with John Aldridge]. If I came over again, I'd want to be the manager. The chairman asked what I would do at Dundee and I sent him a detailed plan. He came to Italy for a couple of days and I was given my chance."
