After last week's disappointment at Gillingham, Town will hope to bounce back against Lancashire opponents Burnley at Blundell Park tomorrow, where The Mariners have lost only 4 times in their past 20 home games.

The all time record of Grimsby against Burnley reads: P40 W15 D6 L19

-15 of these losses were at Turf Moor.

Past Meetings

  • The last meeting was back in September when Town grabbed a 1-1 draw courtesy of Danny Butterfield's first league goal. This game also marked the debut for the on-loan Stuart Campbell.
  • In January 1974 Town met Burnley in the third round of the FA Cup. Town were in the third division, while Burnley were in the first. This Burnley side contained ex mariner Doug Collins who we will see later. Burnley ended 2-0 victors of Ron Ashmans men.

Past Players

After a spell at Burnley in 1895, Scotsman Stuart Munn joined the Mariners making 63 appearances from 1895 to 1898. The fiery midfielder was widely acclaimed for his tireless work in the engine room and ferocious tackling. He then moved on to Manchester City for four years.

Just after this time, David Beveridge also moved from Turf Moor to Blundell Park, in 1899. In his time at Burnley he won the Division Two Championship, in 1898 playing at ‘wing half’ in that time. Although he was exceptionally speedy, he struggled to hold down a regular place in the Mariners senior line up, despite scoring 2 goals in 5 games.

There were two more Pre-war players that had played for the Clarets as well as the Mariners. One of these was German Max Seeburg who, before his spells at Burnley and Grimsby played for Chesnut, Chelsea, Tottenham and Leyton. He was traditionally a right half, and spent just a year on the coast with the Mariners, before joining Reading and then moving on to become a Licensee. He played just 20 games for the Mariners in 1911. He died in 1972.

Tommy Mayson also came from Burnley in 1911. He signed for £350 which was then a club record! However he certainly repaid that money with some class performances, despite fracturing his leg in 1912. He went on to play 85 games scoring 28 goals, until he moved on to Everton in 1919. Mayson also had the honour of being a guest player for Leeds United during World War one. He died in 1972.

Douggie Collins (pictured at top) was a star of Burnley's 1973 Division Two title success. Having progressed with the Mariners, he scored 9 goals in 96 games from 1963-68 despite being a forward. But his talents as a provider rather than a goal scorer were recognised and was bought by Burnley in 1968, for £27,000 playing for 8 years there before becoming Rochdale's player-manager.
