REPORTS in a Sunday newspaper suggest that Leeds United striker Lee Matthews could be set for a surprise switch to Tranmere Rovers later this week. Matthews, who is currently on trial with Grimsby Town, is believed to have come to the attention of Rovers' boss John Aldridge.

The Birkenhead club's manager is reported as having watched Matthews playing for the United reserves last week.

Although the 22-year-old striker is under contract with the Premiership side until the summer, Leeds boss David O'Leary has told him that his present deal will not be renewed and has advised him to start looking for another club.

The Mariners are currently desperate to add some fire-power in an effort to revive their flagging bid to maintain First Division status next season and the departure of Matthews would be seen as yet another blow to the club after constantly failing in their efforts to attract a striker to Blundell Park.
