Donovan on Run-In

By: Richard Lord
Date: 08/04/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN winger Kevin Donovan believes that the Mariners will have to provide a few shock results in order to escape the drop into Division Two. Town face one of their toughest run-ins of recent times when they will play six of the top nine teams between now and the end of the season.

"When you look at it on paper it's one of the hardest," Donovan told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph. "Ourselves and Huddersfield have got two of the hardest run-ins but it never happens like that. You look at where you think you're going to get points, and it's usually the others where you actually get some. We're hoping that's going to be the case for us."

Just quite where Grimsby are expected to pick up the points they so desperately need is unknown, as they prepare to face Watford, West Brom, Sheffield United, Blackburn, Birmingham and Fulham.

"We know we are in trouble but there's no point in moping around or feeling sorry for ourselves - we have to get on with it. The home games will be vitally important," added the 29-year old. Of next season, should the Mariners survive the drop this season, the former Baggies winger went on to say, "I think we've got to be realistic. You look at the size of the club and if we're even in the first division it's a massive achievement."

"The sides coming up are bigger than this club and it's a fact of football but the players we have got we've got a good chance of survival. If we can keep everybody together in the summer, you never know what might happen next year. It just depends on who we can get in over the summer. They've got to be better than what we've got at the moment."
